The third in the series of Aussie Roadtrips, this time from tropical North Queensland, along the East Coast all the way south to Australia's second largest city, Melbourne. I suspect the voting patterns rating the various climates will be a bit more evenly balanced, given we're travelling along the pleasant and equable climes of Eastern Australia ( as opposed to the outback hellholes of the previous Roadtrips...lol ). Most of the sites chosen are coastal locations, although Rockhampton, Bega and Bairnsdale are a little inland from the ocean. Highway 1 is a beautiful drive, taking in the best of Australia's coastal beaches and scenery, there are literally hundreds of isolated sandy beaches and coves tucked away in secluded spots on the journey south from Cairns. Cairns Townsville Mackay Rockhampton Gold Coast Port Macquarie Woolongong Bega Bairnsdale Melbourne ( Airport )

Rockhampton, mate!
It's got the best combination of everything I want - though it could stand to be wetter in winter. Relatively close to Rockhampton is Gladstone, which is where I wanted to live for a little while as a teenager. Great part of the country for climates.

Bega is the best of the lot here.

Melbourne has the best temps. If Bega gets a solid amount of storms and less cold drizzle, it would win, if the storm difference isnβt that big, Iβll pick Melbourne.

I'll go with Mackay because it gets the most rain and still has some decent seasonality (Cairns is wetter but has less seasonality).
The others (like Bega) have a boring precip pattern, although the temp profile is fairly decent. Winters aren't cold enough to sway me away from the warmer climes of Queensland though.

Melbourne by a long shot. As much as I despise that climate, it's still wayyy better than the other shit heaps on the poll.
Heirarchy:
I. Melbourne
II. Bairnsdale
III. Bega
IV. Wollongong
V. Port Macquarie
VI. Rockhampton
VII. Mackay
VIII. Townsville
IX. Gold Coast
X. Cairns
As a side note, the map you've posted doesn't show the route you intendedβinstead of taking the coastal route from Sydney to Melbourne (via the South Coast), your map shows the inland Hume Highway route (via the South West Slopes). Climate selection would've been a lot better with this routeβ¦Yass, Gundagai, Albury, etc.

Gold Coast. The summers are very agreeable, but the kicker is the epic thunderstorms the area gets. SE QLD gets some of the best storms in the country, with the highest frequency anywhere along the QLD coast. Cairns and Townsville are surprisingly stormless.

Just noticed now that it looks like the route you posted goes through Albury-Wodonga instead. If so then I pick Albury by miles and miles.

Bairnsdale. Besides Woolongong, it's the only climate never reached average highs above 30Β°C at all. Also, average lows maintained below 16Β°C in those warmer summer years.

Townsville. Has tropical temperatures with more sunshine and almost half the rainfall as Cairns.

Brownsville got my vote, temperature wise its great, but precip should be distributed better throughout the year.
