Silly and out of date yeah, worth getting offended about, no. Nobody meant any malicous harm by it. I'm not sure why it's incorrect but for the sake of correctness I'd prefer that it wasn't.

I would tell him that the map is offensive. The map's offensive to me too because everyone in Eastern Europe is on the warm side of the jetstream and.... we're not.. Not true, there is a massive low over Ukraine on that map. Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, has registered a high of 13.0C today. Unfortunately, that low will move to North-West starting from tomorrow, bringing cooler weather here. A true high summer day in Riga today, sunny all day, low of 13.8C and high of 26.8C.

I would tell him that the map is offensive. It is funny and silly at the same time that 30 (!) years after the collapse of the USSR someone somewhere in the West still uses such maps. I have sent them a message. Not expecting anything, just in case. As an anti-Soviet warrior I just need to do something.

High in Võru 26.4c, the warmest was Tallinn with 27.6c, sunny everywhere in the country.
As for this map I'm not offended, it's just interesting where this map comes from. I suppose that in 1991 which was the last year of the Soviet Union's existence there was not even a widespread use of the Internet, let alone internet weather forecasts.

The low is technically to the south of the polar jet stream within the warmer air mass. Low Pressure does occur within warm air masses, causing locally suppressed temps (as in Kharkiv)... not to be confused with actual polar air north of the jet... the polar jetstream is at the boundary between polar maritime easterlies and subtropical sourced airmasses... the UK and Iceland being on the north side of it, getting cooler conditions.
This map should make it clearer; the thickness chart associated with the same time stamp as the jet chart.... where the jet stream is located here clearly delineates the boundary between the greens/blues (polar air) and the warmer airmass with up to 570+dam thickness over Russia. Notice how the 552 dam contour line (thick black one) matches the location of the polar jet, precisely!!

Slightly below average today but mostly sunny, high/low of 68/48, although felt cool with the wind. Tomorrow is same as today but then it's right on into consistent, dry 73/55 weather in the NWS forecast. Could not ask for better, although that is right around where we should be temperature-wise going into late May. Probably the nicest time of year here. The expectation is perfect weather this time of year.

Detroit was 10 F warmer than parts of the deep south today, due to the rare crummy drizzle going on down there.

About 19'C high at the airport yesterday, reached 20'C a dozen kilometers further inland. An official 40.1'C high was recorded though so the exact high is hard to tell. Curious enough, Haparanda, exactly on the border between Finland and Sweden, recorded a 22.2'C high, and the nearest station to Haparanda on the top 10 for the province was Luleå at 16.4'C. No Swedish station was even within 5'C of Haparanda on the Finnish border within hundreds of kilometers

You know its a cold polar country when of all places, Winterpeg is the warmest in mid-May. Why is Churchill so cold? It is just a bit more northern than Riga, but worlds apart in terms of climate.

The geographical situation isn't remotely comparable to Latvia... much less moderating maritime influence to the west. Quite basic stuff, really.

Kronoby was the 3rd warmest location in Finland yesterday with 27.1C. Ylivieska 2nd with 27.7C, Oulu 1st with that record-breaking earliest 28.1C. Four additional stations recorded 80F+.

The geographical situation isn't remotely comparable to Latvia... much less moderating maritime influence to the west. Quite basic stuff, really. Hudson Bay also makes it colder in the summer, but as it freezes over early in the winter, it doesn't make the winters any milder. Plus, the frozen bay makes springs significantly colder. Pretty much the worst of both worlds

Yesterday's highs/lows in the U.S. Note that a lot of the highs in the CAD-affected Carolinas occurred early in the morning. tommyFL Raleigh broke its daily record low max (previous record was 58°F in 1960).

We have our first upper 20s in the forecast! 28C on Monday and 26C on Tuesday next week. A bit far in advance so it could very easily change before then, but that's still a great sight to see!

Foreca looked into it, and while Rantanen was correct that it was the warmest during the currently digitalised record time period, it was not the all-time one. The warmest early May temp is 29.0C on the 6th 1934 recorded in Kauhava, Central Finland.
