When will Environment Canada release their new normals?

Thank you for sending your message to Environment and Climate Change Canada. In the computation of normals there are enormous challenges, especially the requirement to join stations to develop a homogeneous and continuous 30-year observing period for hundreds of sites and in marrying different observing program changes including both manual and automatic stations over the averaging period. Several data sets (hourly and daily) have to be examined for a multitude of climate elements at each site. In addition, new procedures for data quality control for each of the elements have to be considered. Further, normals computation is only one of several uses and applications for observations from the climate data network. Because of these reasons, we don’t expect that the 1991 to 2020 climate normals will be available before the summer 2022.
