With the new LOTR Amazon series just around the corner, I've set up this thread to discuss and/or trash the show.
I can't say I trust Amazon to keep to the spirit of the franchise, especially given some of the casting decisions and that there's allegedly going to be sex scenes, something that Tolkien would not have been pleased with.
But I remain open minded, they've really gone all in. So far they've invested $500 million into producing the first series.

I have been waiting a couple years for this. My expectations are low in preparation for the disappointment. Glad to know the world of middle earth is now diverse and resembles some Game of Thrones type shit, wonder if it will be as raunchy. Btw i hated all of game of thrones.

I'm....interested. I can't tell if it's gonna be good or shit - but it'll be fascinating either way.
Plus it's going to be great to enter the world of Middle Earth once again!

I dont know if I really care for the happenings before Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I would have been interested in what came after, then again what came after based on Tolkiens work was some slow decline to the end of the world lmao. The elves were gone so was magic.

The rights to the The Silmarillion are owned by the Tolkien estate, I believe. So Amazon can basically make up anything about events pre-Hobbit. A lot of the most powerful characters were around in the earlier ages so it could be interesting. Big bad Smaug was a tiddler compared to the ancient dragons.

Yeah I'm fully expecting it to get ruined by modern tastes.
I'll pass.

I wonder if Amazon will...er.. 'develop' the relationship between Gimli and Legolas ? I mean really, mixed species homosexuality might have been frowned upon during the 3rd Age, but deep into the 4th age as we are, surely their love story can be told openly and honestly ?

Personally I would've loved to see an adaptation of the whole Angmar/Fornost storyline, Fall of Arnor etc. (includng Earnur's confrontation with the Witch-king at Minas Ithil).
But after hearing that the nature of the show may be very anti-Tolkienesque…I'd rather they not touch it at all.

Haven't been following it much. I recently watched the LotR trilogy again, and I hold it dear to my heart so I would have high standards for this series.

I suspect a full series still won't come close to the quality of the 12 hours or so of the extended movie trilogy. A 20th anniversary 4K version is out, the visuals still look better than 99% of movies today.

Filming is relocating to the UK. A big lost investment for NZ, don't think it's a coincidence that they announce this shortly after Jacinda Ardern said that NZ's borders will remain airtight for at least another year. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58196473

The UK will depict Middle-earth locations far better than NZ—that much is certain. Especially if the setting of the show will take place in more northerly locations.

Yeah, it will be more authentic now. Tolkien certainly didn't have NZ in mind when he wrote the books. Perhaps I should send this photo of mine to the producers, perfect Hobbit country!

I fear it will be "woke". the LOTR triology was fantastic. but then they ruined "the hobbit" by having black actors.
