With the Aussie BOM touting the possibility of an early start to this season's 'Wet',

Jamie Pilkington:
"Good afternoon trendsetters.
Another cool night last night as the dry season waves us goodbye.
Darwin averages 51 nights below 20 each dry season. This year we had 26 which included one sub 20 in April. Thatโs pretty poor in anyoneโs language and unfortunately there does not look to be any further cool bursts in the coming weeks, so fair to say that the wheels have fallen off this dry and the buildup is going to start this week.
A strong high that is centred over Victoria is slowly pushing east and as such, a strong ridge that has persisted over the NT during the last couple of days is relaxing. This will allow winds to ease and humidity to increase across the north and there will be enough instability to create a few showers about the NE and NW Top End, although these showers will be isolated and falls generally light.
Temperatures as expected will increase this week and those dreaded 35 degree maximums have made an appearance on Darwinโs 7 day forecast.
So interesting days ahead for Top Enders with some potential showers. Hopefully they will fall across the fire grounds in coming days.
Have a great afternoon and enjoy the remaining hours of the dry season."
Nikko Gilbert:
"G'day.
So been watching the IOD development and delayed posting on the neg IOD until I was sure it would stick and I'm finally confident it will.
Well ladies, gents and other, it's official we are in an IOD Negative event...this is evident by the heaviest rains in several decades to be soaking southern Australia. Perth just had the wettest July in 26 years. Many other locations have been flooded this winter all as a result of the neg iod. This winter has reverted back to a very traditional winter for southern folk. Virtually every low has turned in to a cut off low. Cold fronts have been a plenty. Even though for the most part it's not a record breaker, it's still nice to see what one normally expects in southern Australia during the colder months. Will this be the return of these winters at last...time will tell.
As for us in the north, that same neg iod has caused some record breaking heat. However it's also kept the humidity unseasonably high for the most part. We haven't experienced many dry surges mostly due to the abundance of low pressure systems travelling across Southern areas. It's the high pressure systems that send the dry SE winds over us. Unlike other years, the high pressure systems that have been there haven't been particularly strong. As a result we haven't seen those really dry SE winds...except for now. Last couple days the dew point has been very low...sitting around 0ยฐC or lower. This will only be short lived as the humidity will return in the coming days and with it there is an increased risk of some showers around the top. Not dry season breaking but may get enough to settle the dust if lucky. This is the result of an expected trough stretching from the southern top end down in to south Australia. Obviously at this time of year it's very hot and miss with showers or if we get them at all.
Longer term, the upcoming build up and wet season is expected to arrive early similar to last year however with the NEG IOD, it increases the risk of a much earlier monsoon onset. Also it increases the chances of stronger monsoon bursts due to the warmer waters to our north west. So an interesting few months ahead.
Have a good day."
So I thought I better get in early for a new thread re the coming 'Wet Season'
As I type, we have an overcast morning in Darwin. The overnight min of 23.4c was 3.1c above average for August. so no doona on the bed, only a light sheet and the ever present fan woop wooping around.
A few light sprinkles reported from Howard Springs and some light showers over the Tiwi Islands as the radar shows.
