Our 4th +35c for the month. Prior to 2020, there had only been 14 such heat days in August since records commenced in 1941. Then there were 5 in 2020 and 4 so far this August.

3rd consecutive +35c and 5th for the month, equalling last years record. From a post I made today on a local FB Weather Group. "How good is it when the sea breeze kicks in ? Nikko mentioned it in an earlier post out there in the Gunn Point Badlands. Here's what it looked like at the Airport Darwin and District Obs for today, and yesterday and todays half hourly observations at the Airport. The DP's very low during the peak max temp, then the sea breeze kicks in, raising the DP's and humidity."

Here we go....its starting, the 'build up' that is. About a month earlier than normal. Here is a coupla Sept facts and figures for the Airport Site Ahhh, September...... "Try to remember the kind of September When life was slow and oh, so mellow Try to remember the kind of September When grass was green and grain was yellow Try to remember the kind of September When you were a tender and callow fellow Try to remember and if you remember Then follow, follow....." Ok, thats enough waxing lyrical, lets have a bit of a look at September in Darwin. A transitional month to be sure and it varies year to year from a full blown dry season month, or a sticky hot and humid build up month. The weather nerd in us wants to see the first build up storms in September ( as per last year 2020 ) although in reality, these are most likely ( historically ) in October. The Airport averages 16.5mm in September, although the median ( what is most likely to happen ) is only 6.5mm. There have been 16 rainless Septembers since 1941, the last couple of years being 2014, 2017 and 2019. And, being the highly variable and transitional month it is, twice has the monthy totals exceed 100mm, eight times exceeded 50mm and fifteen times exceeded the old one inch ( 25.4mm ). The record rainfall for Sept was 129.8mm in 1981, and 108.1mm in 1942. Temps- Max and Min. Again, a transitional month, and generally shows traits of the dry in the first weeks and then build up like in the last half as humidity rises and Hector and the Labelle Cell gets up and running to our north and south west respectively. Sept averages (1941-2020 ) - 23.0c min and 32.7c max. Sept averages (1961-1990 ) - 23.2c min and 32.6c max Sept averages (1991-2020 ) - 22.9c min and 33.1c max. So, the old sub 20c min rule of thumb for Sept goodness...... Since 1941 there have been 133 sub 20c mornings. 1941-1950 = 18 1951-1960 = 14 1961-1970 = 22 1971-1980 = 9 1981-1990 = 6 1991-2000 = 8 2001-2010 = 22 2011-2020 = 34 and 40 Septembers out of 80 have not recorded a sub 20c minimum. The record low min is 14.3c in 2006 and the record high minimum is 27.2c in 2009. The sub 30c maxs (good ) and +35 maxs ( not good ) by the decade. Sub 30c days 1941-1950 = 29 1951-1960 = 7 1961-1970 = 6 1971-1980 = 2 1981-1990 = 14 1991-2000 = 6 2001-2010 = 0 2011-2020 = 0 Total = 64 days below 30c since 1941 Plus 35c days 1941-1950 = 4 1951-1960 = 17 1961-1970 = 16 1971-1980 = 25 1981-1990 = 25 1991-2000 = 22 2001-2010 = 35 2011-2020 = 43 Total = 187 days above 35c since 1941. The coldest September day was 25.1c in 2007 and the hottest Sept day was 37.7c in 1983. So whats gunna happen in Sept 2021 ? Buggered if I know....Modelling and forecasts are predicting an earlier onset of build up conditions....be good to see all that juicy convection re appearing. I seriously doubt there will be any more sub 20c mins this season and the trend of above average max and min temps is likely to continue. Fingers crossed for some good September rain in 2021 !

The Kimberley heat low and trough over Northern WA and an easterly flow across the Top End bodes well for some showers and possible storms in the Darwin reion this weekend. Last few days have been as dry as a witches tit....34.6c today and atm, so no sea breeze and gusty winds, low DP's and humidity. Winds gusting to 60klm/h have caused extreme fire danger today.

Slightly cooler temps forecast in the next few days and a heightened chance of some wet stuff. Mind you, this sorta setup is very patchy and you have to be lucky to be under a shower or storm at this time of the year.

Not often there is a 37c forecast in suburban Darwin. The record max for Sept is 37.7c. The moisture and humidity of the last few days has retreated in the face of a drier south easterly surge.

The extreme heat forecasts still holding for Darwin City.....36c tomorrow and 37c on Tuesday. I doubt these temps will be reached, nevertheless, its not often we see a forecast this high at the Airport.

Near-Record September Warmth In Darwin ( source: Weatherzone ) A surge of warm southeasterly winds will cause temperatures to soar across the western Top End during the next two days. This burst of abnormally hot air is being pushed north by a strong high pressure system traversing southern Australia this week. While the city's average maximum temperature in September is 32.7ºC, the mercury could climb 4-5ºC above this on Monday and Tuesday. Darwin is forecast to reach 36ºC on Monday and 37ºC on Tuesday, which is within one degree of its September record of 37.7ºC from 1983. If Darwin Airport does reach 37ºC on Tuesday, it will be only the seventh September day this warm in 81 years of records at the site. The heat will combine with low relative humidity and blustery winds to cause Severe to Extreme Fire Danger Ratings across most of the Top End on Tuesday. ntense heat and elevated fire danger ratings will also extend across parts of the Kimberley and Pilbara in WA during the next few days. Broome is forecast to reach 40ºC on Tuesday, which hasn't happened during September for 11 years. Maximum temperatures will return to the mid-thirties in Darwin from Wednesday as milder air moves over the region.
