In 1908, 10 sites were proposed as potential locations for Australia's new national capital; Albury, Armidale, Bombala, Dalgety, Lake George, Lyndhurst, Orange, Tooma, Tumut and Yass/Canberra. All of these places had one climatic feature in common: chilly winters (by Aussie standards). This was partially due to the influence of early Australian politician King O'Malley, who believed cold climates were conductive to the production of geniuses.
Which of these would've had the best climate?
Albury, NSW
Rejected as a national capital for being too close to Melbourne.
Armidale, NSW
Rejected for being too far from Sydney and Melbourne
Bombala, NSW
Original choice of the Senate after the first parliamentary vote for Australia's capital.
Tumut, NSW
Original choice of the House of Representatives after the first parliamentary vote. Nearby is another proposed site, Tooma.
Dalgety, NSW
A compromise settled on by the Senate and the House of Representatives after the conflicting first vote. However, it was later rejected due to its remoteness. Cooma has the nearest BOM station at a similar altitude.
Orange, NSW
The New South Wales government pushed for sites relatively close to Sydney, including Orange and nearby Lyndhurst.
Lake George, NSW
Rejected because Lake George is more of a muddy swamp than a lake and wouldn't have been able to supply the capital with enough fresh water. Closest weather station is in Queanbeyan.
Yass-Canberra, NSW/ACT
Eventually, the Yass/Canberra area was chosen as the site of Australia's capital. However, Yass didn't end up becoming a part of the Australian Capital Territory.

Pretty poor selection TBH. I'll pick Albury for the decent summers. The winters are still nasty though.

Albury. Most palatable of that lot.

Gonna have to go with Bombala as it has the coldest winter nights.

I did some schooling in both Albury and Armidale ( haha memories of unheated boarding school dorms in Albury and going to footy training in Armidale in light snow ). The winter ( by Aussies standards ) is reasonably short and sharp in Armidale, and given the latitude of 30*S, Spring and warmth kickes in earlier than the other sites on the list. Armidale, I suggest, has the best storms of the selection, in fact the whole Northern Tablelands District is a renowned destination for the avid storm chaser. Lots of Super Cells and severe hailstorms are reported from around Armidale. Also the latitude means a summer rainfall pattern generally and the relative dryness tends to produce severe winter frosts. The Airport site is to the south of the city high up on the New England plataux, the Town site is right in the valley of Dumaresq creek and records much colder mins than the exposed Airport site. Armidale

Albury. Most palatable of that lot. Wouldn't Armidale be a better choice because of the wetter and probably more thundery summers? I would go with Albury as well. But Armidale was a very close call.

Albury takes it for having the driest/hottest summers of the bunch. Good selection, all are decent climates.

Orange; with Tumut coming in at 2nd place.
Love the thread idea! Most climates listed here, are heaps better than Crapberra.

Orange is the best, overall.

Orange also. These are all pretty similar climates. Orange has the coldest winter highs and Bombala's summer lows are a bit too low.

Albury being the warmest of the bunch (a little hot during summer days); gets my vote, as it also has a fair amount of rainfall and sunshine.
