Roebourne is situated on the North West Coastal Highway, approximately 40 kilometres east of Karratha, 200 kilometres south of Port Hedland and 1550 kilometres north of Perth. The Withnell family were the first European settlers to arrive in the area, settling at the foot of Mount Welcome in April 1864. The town of Roebourne was gazetted at this location in 1866, the first town to be established in the North West. Roebourne was named for the first Western Australian Surveyor General, John Septimus Roe.
Discoveries of gold, copper and tin in the region and the development of the pearling industry at the nearby port town of Cossack contributed to Roebourne's importance and prosperity. The restored heritage stone buildings date to this period and include some designed by renowned Public Works Department Architect George Temple Poole. Of note is the octagonal shape gaol, which now houses a historical museum.

Roebourne has a bit of an unsavoury reputation re social welfare issues, especially alcohol abuse and some historic child abuse incidents. The Victoria Hotel located on the main north-south highway had an Australia wide reputation as a 'blood house', complete with iron barred windows and doors and the obligatory drunks laying about on the streets and gutters and being occaisionly run over asleep on the highway. The pub was shut by the Authorities about 15 years ago, but in recent years has had a bit of a makeover.

Climatically, Roebourne in rated by Aussies as an official CoaP ( C#*t of a Place ) I can attest to this rating, have worked nearby for 3 and half years 2011-2014. Brutal life threatening heat, close enough to the coast ( about 14klm ) to suffer debilitating humidity and DP's, but far enough inland for the sea breeze not to bother when the extreme heat/easterlies are blowing hence all of the summer months have recorded a +49c max temperature. Winters are generally warm and pleasant, and nights can be decidedly chilly in the dry season months. The coastal lowlands around Roebourne are pretty well treeless, indicative of a wildly erratic arid climate. Most rain falls during the northern Monsoon season, with tropical cyclones responsible for the majority of the rain.
Roebourne is also located along the most cyclone prone coast in Australia, and the town has been damaged and destroyed many times in the last 150 years.
Roebourne has well documented climate data. The older Post Office site in town has records from 1887-2015 for rainfall and digitised temp records from 1957-2015.
The Roebourne Airport site has 20 years records 2001-2021.

This old weather station was located at the Harding Dam construction site about 30 klm inland from Roebourne. One can only imagine the temps this bad boy must have recorded ! Not an official BOM installation, I had the BOM records/extremes guys look into it, they cant find any records.
And some pics of Roebourne from my time in the area
