Late fall can be an active period for severe weather in my area. November is actually the month with highest tornado frequency in Louisiana; April has the 2nd most.

We had a windstorm on Sunday with a max gust of 62 mph that took down many branches and small trees.

That's not a severe weather episode in strict sense, but the weather conditions are surely making it much worse. In practice here in my valley there are several large fires along the mountain sides, which are particularly insidious because of the long-lasting drought (we haven't seen any relevant precipitation for more than 2 months) and because of the presence of an insistent foehn wind (dry and warm wind, this time the wind speed reached 80 Km/h). All the fires are far from my home and can't reach us, but the amount of smoke visible from all the valley and even beyond is really impressive and causes a lot of concern. It is going on since yesterday afternoon, and the firefighter can't do much because of the strong wind, which doesn't allow the employment of helicopters and nor air-tankers. And we are quite angry too, because all those fires are more likely man-made . They have literally chosen the moment in which the damage from a fire could be as high as possible. Picture 1

Picture 3Picture 4For me, the most impressive thing was the amount of smoke. It looks like all that it is visible even from satellites.

Enhanced severe risk in the Midwest on Sunday Reminds me of the 11/17/2013 severe wx outbreak Right now large hail & damaging winds appear to be the main threat, but still some uncertainties. I wouldn't be too surprised if the tornado threat gets larger.

30mm of rain in 15 minutes at the airport today which caused flooding in the international terminal. How fun!

NWS SPC is already showing a severe risk for Saturday, six days in advance. I wonder if this will be the first severe weather outbreak of the year.

EF2 tornado confirmed about 20 miles southeast of Alexandria yesterday. 4 minor injuries in a trailer home that was flipped over. Severe weather reports so far in 2018. Red is tornado, blue is wind damage, and green is large hail.
