For those of you with the available data, how do your monthly median temperatures compare to the means? How similar are they? I wrote some code to calculate the median max temps for each month at my nearest weather station, and found the greatest discrepancies in late spring and summer (perhaps unsurprisingly). While July features the same mean and median, the mean maximum in December is one degree warmer than the median. It makes sense, since our infamous hot days in summer bump up the averages. Here are my findings in the table:
| MEAN MAX | MEDIAN MAX | Jan | 26.5 | 25.6 | Feb | 26.8 | 26.1 | Mar | 24.3 | 23.5 | Apr | 20.3 | 19.8 | May | 16.6 | 16.1 | Jun | 13.8 | 13.7 | Jul | 13.2 | 13.2 | Aug | 14.4 | 14.1 | Sep | 16.6 | 16.0 | Oct | 19.4 | 18.6 | Nov | 21.9 | 21.0 | Dec | 24.3 | 23.3 |
I couldn't be bothered analysing minimum temps, as it requires downloading another dataset. However, I suspect there won't be much difference since they are more stable than our maximums.
