From Forties To Frigid In WA. ( source: Weatherzone ) It's an afternoon of strong temperature contrasts in Australia's largest state, and while that's not too unusual on almost any day of the year given the vast size of Western Australia, the difference between the coldest and hottest areas is more dramatic than usual this Friday afternoon. In the far southwest in the vicinity of Albany, numerous stations were showing a meagre 12°C. Up north, the usual suspects in the Kimberley forecast district were nudging forty. Indeed Fitzroy Crossing had already reached 40°C today. Temps in the vicinity of 40°C and beyond are of course perfectly normal in northern WA at this time of year. For example, Fitzroy Crossing's average max is 40.3°C and 40.9°C in October and November respectively (interestingly, it then drops a couple of degrees over summer due to the influence of tropical moisture). But what's unusual today is those super cool temps down south. For example, Albany's average November max is 20.9 but it may struggle to reach today's forecast top of 15°C. There are two main culprits for this late spring chill: an area of low pressure at the surface level, and a cut-off low in the upper atmosphere. These two synoptic features are working in unison to pull cold polar air from the south into the region. You can see the steady flow of showers from the south affecting the SW corner of the state on the loop below. That cool air looks likely to stick around for the weekend, with a top of 15°C again on the cards for Albany on Saturday, with 16°C expected on Sunday. Definitely not the greatest beach weather this weekend. As you'd expect, the airmass warms ever so slightly as you head north, and while Perth is doing better than Albany and other spots in the South Coastal forecast district, it's still struggling to reach 20°C on Friday afternoon. Perth will stay cool for the weekend with tops in the low twenties and single-digit overnight minimums likely. So it'll be jacket weather for anyone going out, but at least it won't be raincoat weather as it will be for people in the eastern capital cities at various times this weekend.

Got down to 14 (-10 c) this morning, by far the coldest of the season and the first teens. Forecast is complete garbage though with 35-45 f highs for the foreseeable future yet no snow. Dry cold is rapidly becoming one of my most hated types of weather.

At 3 PM yesterday here, the temperature was 71 F (22 C) - the latest 70 since 2016, and a new record high for the date.
At 3 PM today, the temperature was 32 F (0 C) - a 24-hour drop of 39 F (22 C)! Impressive. Looks like the cold is here to stay too; the warmest temp in my forecast for the next week is 37 F (3 C) on Monday. Well that flipped from summer to winter quickly!

Very warm morning in southern Finland. A lot of station records will be broken, including Artukainen. At least 14.0C has been recorded, the station's previous record was 13.7C, and Turku's record overall is 14.0C. Helsinki Centre has recorded 14.2C so far, a new all-time record.
The Finnish November record of 16.6C should be safe, though.
Meanwhile it's a completely different picture up in the far north. Currently -5.1C in Utsjoki Kevo.

More strange weather here again. Yesterday the temperature steadily rose through the day and peaked at 72 F/22 C just before midnight. It stayed around 70 F/21 C all night. Temperature will slowly drop and tomorrow is not even forecast to get about 50 F/10 C. Hourly obs (KFWN):

Turku Artukainen hit 14.1C so that is a new all-time record with 0.1C. Helsinki Centre hit 14.3C, but Helsinki Harbour recorded 14.5C, so that will be a new record for the city as a whole. Highest was 15.1C on the Åland islands in Jomala.

I went camping last night in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Around 18:00-19:00, we had some sleet and graupel showers. The temperature was around 37°F (3°C). Individual sleet and graupel pellets stuck around for a bit before melting, but there was no appreciable accumulation. That is the first time I have experienced winter weather while camping, and it was the third earliest I have experienced winter weather (there was an ice storm in October 2020 and snow flurries in October 2019). However, it turned into a beautiful day today, with a high of 49°F (9.5°C) and sunshine.

It's 9°C in Sheffield but 20°C in NW Wales today. An incredible late season record, no doubt aided by the Foehn effect.

The freakishly warm start to November is about to take a turn. We've had 8 days with highs in the 70s and the average high is near 70 F/21 C.
This week trending much cooler with highs below average (40s).

Very warm in western France today, up to 26°C in the Basque country. High temps were all over the place here, from 17°C in the city center to 7°C in the far eastern outskirts, due to the varying degrees of persistence of fog:

Windy and wild here in Sydney, but dry and sunny (after a stormy and rainy witching hour). Taste of the "roaring forties" with those westerlies. Foehn effect in the southeast right now:
