Following on from a recent shoutbox discussion re sickening heat and murderously hot locations, I've drawn up a list of some of my worst outdoors jobs regarding hellishly hot working conditions. 12 hour days and 12 beers nights during the peak heat seasons of the year is hard on body and mind. To make things worse, we in AU have bush flies that torment you when working outdoors. I'm reasonably acclimatised to hot climates, but I've been known to struggle at times.
This list includes data for max temps only during the times I was on the job.
1/- TIMBER CREEK, NT ( 2019 )
Of all the times to start a bridge demolition project in the Victoria River Region of the NT....FFS why pick the build up months of Oct, Nov and Dec ? Heat, humididity, dust, flies, Timber Creek had it all, as well as lots of gut busting physical labour....we put in some hard yards on this project....
Oct-Dec 2019 max temps
2/- ROPER BAR, NT ( 1993-94 )
Of all the times to start a bridge construction project in the Gulf region of the NT....FFS why pick the build up months of Oct, Nov and Dec ? Brutal heat and humidity....my room at the Camp was right near the BOM Weather Station, and being the stats nerd I am, I would check the max temps every night after work and report to the rest of the crew sitting around having a few beers....until after one 42c day the Boss threatened me with violence and the sack if I ever mentioned the temperatures again....he said it was bad for morale....lol
Oct-Dec 1993 max temps
See where the temps from mid Dec drop back into the mid 30's, yeah ?, Thats because the 'wet' started, so intread of dry hot sunny and dusty it was wet hot, humid, overcast and muddy....
YANDI/NEWMAN, WA ( 2014-15 )
Ahhh, the Pilbara....I have a love / hate relationship with the Pilbara...its either too hot 8 months of the year and too cold 4 months of the year.
Horrible relentless heat c/w dust, a big burning sun and oh, did I mention the flies ? cursed things !!
Wonderfull dusty working conditions, red iron ore dust
Wonderfull muddy working conditions, red iron ore mud
Wonderfull icy cold beers after work
Not so wonderfull icy hailstorm
Oct-Feb 2014-15 max temps
ROEBOURNE, WA ( 2011-2014 )
Quintessential lowland Pilbara heat hellhole, renowned for temps peaking around the 50c mark, indeed reached 50.5c back in January this year, Dry and desolate, bur come the northern wet season months the heat and humidity increases to 'unbearable'. The town is located 15klm from the coast, just far enough to get a weak sea breeze on extreme heat days. I experienced my hottest temps in AU here in Dec 2011 - 49.4c. Was impossible to perform physical labour outdoors after 11.00am
Mostly dry and dusty except when hit by a tropical cyclone screaming in from the Indian Ocean, then the place floods.
Oct-Dec 2011 max temps
CAMDEN, NSW ( 2003 )
At least up north and over in the West, the heat is consistant and you sorta acclimatise. Working down south the temps flip flop all over the place and its harder to cope with extreme heat days. Jan 2003 I was putting up satellite antennas in western Sydney, those mid 40c days were particularly debilitating
Jan 2003 max temps
BENDIGO, VIC
Hard to imagine a place way down south in north central Victoria being a hot hellhole, but it was the nature of the job that was disgustingly hot. We installed a large satellite antenna up on the roof of the 6 storey Telstra building in down town Bendigo. The air temps weren't particulary hot, but it was the reflected and radiational heat coming of the roof war really bad....we had 42c day up on the roof and that day near put me down for the count. I've maintained previously on the forum its probably the hottest job I've ever had ! I'd flown down from a Darwin wet season to a drought stricken northern Victoria, not a blade of green grass and dry as a wooden chip.
Jan-Mar 2000 max temps
Jan and Feb and half of March was nice and warm , mid March the switch flipped to winter
COBRAM, VIC ( 1978 )
Working as a young fella on the family tomato farm, My Uncle grew tomatoes for the SPC Cannery, some years we had 150 acres which we harvested mechanically. Summers in the Murray Valley get pretty hot by southern AU standards and I spent some long hot and dusty summer days in those paddocks. Oh and frcken flies !!
Dec-Mar 1977-78
