As weather enthusiasts, it seems like many here (unsurprisingly) are into interesting weather, such as storms and extreme temperatures. However, some of these events can lead to widespread disruption, damage or even deaths. How does the possibility of significant consequences affect your interest in weather? Is there a certain point where you go "Okay this is getting real bad, just give me some tame weather"? I'm sure you've felt conflicted before on this, where on the one hand, a system has piqued your interest, but on the other hand, you worry about the societal effects. I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad by the way haha, just wanted to hear your thoughts on this.

I don’t want cat 4 or 5 hurricanes. Otherwise no.

People don't die from weather phenomena here, and there's seldom any widespread distruction.

I always root for cool + wet in the western half of the country because drought is really bad here and not interesting.
Otherwise I’m more on the side of interesting weather unless it causes damage to my property.

My username is literally fairweatherfan so I'm not the best person to ask. I'm not really a fan of "interesting" weather, I like it when the weather is not noteworthy at all. I do find storms and severe weather beautiful though, and a powerful expression of nature's wrath. I think my weather preferences go hand-in-hand with societal concerns, for me one of the most important criteria for rating a climate is how well it can support agriculture.

The best climate in my opinion doesn’t have any natural disasters. I don’t care about interesting weather.
Winters should be cold and too dry for blizzards.
Summers should have decent precipitation so the landscape doesn’t turn brown, but no precipitation should come as thunderstorms.
No hurricanes, tornadoes and temperatures above 95F either
No droughts except during winter since the plants would be dormant due to the cold anyway
Earthquakes are not related to weather but whatever.
I swear, I’d rather live in the middle of Antarctica instead of somewhere that gets “interesting weather”
What you see as “interesting weather” I see as “a potential threat to human life or property”

I wouldn't want to live anywhere that gets catastrophic weather on an annual basis.
That said:
1. We live on a chaotic and dynamic planet, not a safe and secure laboratory. Anything goes... 2. Humans can always rebuild if things get damaged. 3. Hurricane Fiona was a bit scary but not that bad for me personally for damage. Just got lucky.

I couldn't care less about society or people other than myself. So yeah.

I couldn't care less about society or people other than myself. So yeah. There's that, yeah. I'm the exact opposite lol. I don't care that much about the weather myself, I only care about what other people think.

I don't want weather that causes death or widespread property damage. I like to follow interesting weather events, but I don't root for increased death and destruction.

I've always been interested in extreme weather events, want to see how they begin, evolve and ultimately impact a place, a region, a State, a Country and a Continent. Tropical storm systems fascinate me....do I want them to cause widespread destruction and death ? Certainly not ! I'm one of those sad people ( as most weather/climate nerds are ) who reads all the charts/models/forecasts, takes pics of storms, goes out storm chasing etc.

Mild and balmy climates can be just as interesting as the 'interesting' climates, in which, the former, is objectively a lot more beneficial to humanity as a whole, mainly agriculture as well as human comfort. My preferences are hardly harmful for society, mostly to its benefit, because I am a part of it too to some extent.

I like strong storms for interest, but not extreme deadly events. A storm knocking out power for a bit or heavy snow blocking the roads is fine. So is flooding or drought that causes property damage...but not widespread famine. Tornadoes are too much. I'd be happy if I never saw a tornado in person. I'd be unhappy if thunderstorms suddenly disappeared. I love sitting out under a covered porch with a beer in hand watching the storm roll through.

I'd be happy if I never experienced a hurricane again, I don't care for weather that causes widespread death and destruction, e.g. tornadoes. Like, strong/severe T-storms with gusty winds and heavy rain that knock out power are welcome every now and then, but tornadoes are too much. I love heat waves but wouldn't want widespread famine caused by them.

Nah, weather I like causing death and destruction doesn't stop me from liking it, or finding it interesting to follow or experience. Grand majority of weather related deaths are from people being stupid anyways. Destruction, such as from a Category 4/5 hurricane or an F4/F5 tornado is of course very sad, and I don't really root for that type of weather anyways.
One thing that should be mentioned is that literally any type of weather in extreme excess has the potential to cause death and destruction.

Personally don't give a rat's nutsack if my favourite weather type kills people, and if it kills me some day, I won't know about it anyway.

Relevant time to dig up this thread
Natural disasters that cause death and destruction are a hard no for me. I'm fine with a storm that knocks out power for a bit, or a day or two of extreme heat, but there's a certain point where it's too much and the societal impact cannot be ignored.

Usually I don't give af about what one roots for, rooting for heatwaves/coldwaves or storms is fine - there's a fine line with those kind of things, but rooting for a hurricane when one already caused one of the worst natural disasters in NC history for example isn't
