Inspired by tommyFL 's QGIS maps from late 2021/early 2022, I've learned how to use QGIS and create maps from delimited text files during my absence from the forum, so here's a map of the largest recorded diurnal ranges for the 387 ThreadEx NRCC sites in the CONUS with temp data. This is only a small fraction of the total number of stations in the USA available from xmACIS2, but I chose to use these because they have a longer POR and easier to work with. I discounted a few obviously erroneous readings (e.g. a 67°F (49/-18°F) diurnal range recorded in Mount Mitchell on January 30, 1934 was discounted due to the fact that no other station even came close to seeing such a diurnal, and Banner Elk saw a 10°F max that day). As I used a quick-and-dirty Python script to grab such values, if anyone would like to know their largest diurnal range for their locale/town, feel free to let me know in this thread, the shoutbox or my DM's. Hopefully I got everything right.  |

Nice map. I was looking at mean annual largest diurnals for a few stations a while ago, but never got around to making a map. Would be interesting to see how well it correlates with all-time records.

Fort Collins should be blue, 75 f is the largest.

Nice work Benfxmth! Largest ever here in Nassau LI should be 46F, which occurred on March 13, 1990 with a high/low of 85F/39F. That places me in the orange (barely), and I’m just on the border on your map, so well done. Also, when did Atlanta’s record 49F diurnal occur? |

Not what I would have expected. Spring and fall average pretty large diurnals in ATL, those are the seasons with the most radiative cooling. Thought it would have been something along the lines of a 90F/41F day in April or October. That was impressive though, just shows how cold the airmass was, as it was advective. |

Great work! Not surprised the Portland Int'l and Portland Hillsboro airports are in different color zones. The Hillsboro airport in Washington County experiences higher highs and lower lows since it's located on a flat plain.

Some places in AU with the highest mean average monthly diurnal ranges Some of these are older closed sites ( the forestry ones ), nevertheless still pretty good by AU standards. Some places in south eastern Australia approach a 20c difference between average max and min temps in Dec-January The other side of the coin is way up north in the Kimberley of Western Australia, where dry season ( winter ) average max and min temps also approach/exceed a 20c difference. Large Summer Diurnals: CORRYONG, VIC - 18.1c diurnal average in January.  MYRTLEFORD,VIC - 19.1c diurnal average in January.  HORSHAM AERO, VIC - 18.6c diurnal average in January.  JOUNAMA FORESTRY, NSW - 19.9c diurnal average in January.  Large Winter Diurnals: WARIALDA, NSW - 18.0c diurnal average in August and 19.0c in September.  MOUNT ELIZABETH, WA - 18.0c diurnal average in May, Jun-19.5c, Jul-20.7c, Aug-21.8c, Sep-19.7c !  |

Surprised ours is 48°F, probably occured in May or June over 60 years ago, pre-UHI and was probably like 99°F/51°F or in that ballpark
