Can't speak for EcoWitt. I'd recommend Ambient if you care about reliability but not accuracy. The humidity sensor is lower quality and drifts in high humidity over time, eventually reading about 2-3% high on average after several years. The radiation shield is too small and restrictive, so it's very slow to respond to temperature changes. Expect a lag of about 3-5 minutes. The excess radiation error due to the small size of the shield is counteracted somewhat by locating it within the shade of the rain gauge, but that introduces another problem. After rain, the sensor will read too cool and humid due to wet bulbing from water constantly dripping from the drain holes on the bottom of the rain gauge. Bad and cheap design. But the actual temp registered should be decently accurate? Provided the PWS location and setting is legit of course. No way of knowing unless you can actually see the placement of it. Nearby obstuctions can make a huge difference, and the shield doesn't work too well at low wind speeds.

I was at the Jersey Shore (Margate City NJ) for the holiday, and my friend's neighbor had a PWS I could see from the backyard. He wasn't uploading to Wunderground or CWOP though, I checked.

Of course it's mounted on a rooftop. I don't get why you would go through the trouble of buying and mounting a PWS if yoou're gonna stick it somewhere completely unrepresentative. You would think someone with that amount of interest in weather would be at least slightly knowledgeable about correct siting.

Lots are very small. The only suitable spaces there are public fields where it would get stolen most likely. Any other green spaces are on the bay or ocean.

Image living in a detached house with a yard so small that you can't even fit a PWS on it...

Isn't it the point in living in a detached house that you have a yard?

Not necessarily, it's also that you don't share your house with anyone.

Beach towns in SoCal are also like that

Anywhere on the ground, even if only a few feet from a building, is going to be way more accurate than on a rooftop.

Here's some pics of the PWS tommyFL so kindly sent to me. The location was chosen mostly because it is the sunniest spot I have and I didn't want it to be in the middle of the lawn or close to the larch tree I planted recently (not shown here). I will be removing a lot of those raspberry bushes (to the right) at some point before next summer. During winter they won't have much of an effect though since they will lose all their leaves. Trees look much closer than they are in reality. Offset the temp sensor and rain gauge so they aren't interfering with each other. But the positions might be adjusted going forward. It was a rush job since I got totally fucked by about 30-50 mosquitoes when setting it up. Even more distance between the PWS and the trees to the south than the trees to the east shown here (to the left). Hence the solar panel facing to the south. Concrete block I had laying around will keep it nice and stable. Sick of the mud and wet grass though.
