Looking for a home weather station, anyone got any recommendations?

no, too expensive. Only worth it if I had an open expanse of grassy area, which I don't.

Davis VP2/Vue's are one of the better weather stations commercially available for the amateur out there, but you mentioned that it's too expensive for you. One of the cheaper ones out there, but Ambient WX might work for you. ambientweather.com

I'll second Ambient Weather and all the other Ambient-style PWSs out there. I've found it to be very accurate when compared to my nearby COOP station and my other station with a known accurate sensor. My only complaint is humidity is not quite as accurate as it could be.
Or you can build your own PWS quite easily. It's a fun project for anyone who's mechanically/electronically-inclined.

Beercules I also recommend getting a data logger for your PWS (e.g. Weather Link for Davis Instruments, WeatherBridge for Ambient WX, etc) as well, that way you could keep a record of mean temps/dewpoints, upload such weather data if you'd like.

A Davis is too expensive for my current situation, there is too much growth in my yard, plus a huge tree which is the wildcard, no point spending $1000+

Methinks it's your choice. If you intend to mount the anemometer at standard height (33 ft, give or take a few ft), I think the ultrasonic anemometer is superior because it has no moving parts, but the majority of PWS owners don't have enough of a clearing for accurate wind measurements.

I certainly have nothing that could be described as an adequate clearing... That ultrasonic one I can't mount up anywhere too high either as it is combined with the temp sensor.

OK fair enough, I figured so!

No chance of anything even close to an accurate wind speed measurement with a PWS. Don't even think about it.

Ok, ordered the ultrasonic model. Figured I'll give that a go as it was heavily discounted on Amazon.

How much in $AU mate ? my youngest son is in the market for one too... $320 with a coupon on Amazon. Ecowitt HP2553As far as I know it's basically a Ambient Weather WS-5000 clone.

tommyFL do you still recommend Ambient and EcoWitt products? If not, why not? And what would be recommended?

Can't speak for EcoWitt. I'd recommend Ambient if you care about reliability but not accuracy. The humidity sensor is lower quality and drifts in high humidity over time, eventually reading about 2-3% high on average after several years.
The radiation shield is too small and restrictive, so it's very slow to respond to temperature changes. Expect a lag of about 3-5 minutes. The excess radiation error due to the small size of the shield is counteracted somewhat by locating it within the shade of the rain gauge, but that introduces another problem. After rain, the sensor will read too cool and humid due to wet bulbing from water constantly dripping from the drain holes on the bottom of the rain gauge. Bad and cheap design.

But the actual temp registered should be decently accurate? Provided the PWS location and setting is legit of course.
