I have another thread where i tried to see where New Zealand cities are most similar to in Europe which for the most cities we eventually found. Now i'd like to try Australia which we will obviously compare to a much larger area given it's size. I'll go first with a few cities and if you guys find any more feel free to add them in. I'm sure there are more similar cities than the ones i have chosen
I'll start off with the most Southern part of the country and moving upward
Hobart (Tasmania, Cfb): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobart This one i had the most struggle to find. The closest city i could match this with is Gijon in Northern Spain en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gij%C3%B3n
Year round temperatures are fairly similar between both these climates. Gijon does get a good more rainy days than Hobart however Hobart is alot sunnier with 2393 sunshine hours compared to 2034 sunshine hours for Gijon
Melbourne (Victoria, Cfb): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne For this one i found the most similar to be Barcelona in eastern Spain, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelona Specifically using the Barcelona airport station. Year round temperatures are fairly similar with Barcelona on average being 1 degree colder than Melbourne in winter but also 1 degree warmer in summer. They both get similar a amount of rainfall. In terms of Sunshine hours Barcelona is a decent bit sunnier than Melbourne by about 200 hours annually
Canberra (Australia Capital territory, Cfb) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra For this climate i found Pamplona in Northern Spain to be very similar. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamplona. Temperature wise these climates year round are very similar, the biggest difference i noticed is that Canberra is a few degrees warmer in winter. In terms of Rainfall Pamplona is a bit wetter however the biggest difference is sunshine hours. Canberra is a very sunny climate which receives 500 hours of sunshine more than Pamplona
Adelaide (South Australia, Csa) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide This one i found to be among the easiest to find an almost identical climate. The easiest choice here is Palma, Majorca which is in the Mediterranean sea south east of Spain en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palma_de_Mallorca
As you can see with both climates there is very little to say. In terms of year round temperatures, rainfall and sunshine hours they are pretty much identical. The only major difference is that Adelaide is more susceptible to extremely hot temperatures with the record high being 47.7C compared to Majorca 38C
Sydney (New South Wales, Cfa) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney For this climate in order to find a similar climate we need to move into Africa however because it is a humid subtropical climate that we are looking for then we need to go to south east Africa and the closest climate i have found is East London in South Africa en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_London,_South_Africa Not to be confused with another East London lol. The temperatures in both these cities year around are fairly similar with some little differences. Sydney gets warmer summer temperatures but East London gets warmer winter temperatures. In terms of Rainfall Sydney is a bit wetter however they both have a similar amount of rainy days. In terms of Sunshine both these cities are identical.
Perth (Western Australia, Csa) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perth For this Climate i found the Greek Island of Rhodes just off the southern coast of Turkey to be most similar en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhodes Temperature wise year round these climates are fairly similar. The biggest difference is that Perth is 2-4C warmer in terms of it's winter average high. In terms of Rainfall Perth is a bit wetter and receives more rainy days that Rhodes however in terms of Sunshine both these climates are identical with each receiving over 3200 hours which puts them into the extremely sunny category of around 75% of the year
Brisbane (Queensland, Cfa) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brisbane For this climate like Sydney we will have to go to eastern south Africa to look for a humid subtropical climate and the most similar i found is Richards Bay in South Africa en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richards_Bay In terms of temperatures year round these cities are fairly similar, Brisbane get's slightly warmer summers and Richard Bay gets slightly warmer winters. In terms of rainfall Richards Bay is a bit wetter and receives a good bit more rainy days. In terms of Sunshine hours unfortunately Richards Bay doesn't have this data however if we look at other climates around this area they are in the late 2000's while Brisbane receives around 3000 hours of sunshine.
Darwin (Northern Territory, Aw) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin...hern_Territory For this climate we have to go much deeper into Africa from the South and move closer to the equator to the city of Mombasa in Kenya en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mombasa In terms of year round temperatures they are for the most part fairly similar. Darwin's average high temperatures are either the same or around 2C warmer than Mambasa. In terms of Rainfall Darwin receives significantly more however both cities have a similar amount of rainy days. In terms of Sunshine Darwin is around 200 hours sunnier than Mambasa receiving 3110 hours per year. I understand both these cities are slightly different classifications but this was the most similar i could find and i don't think apart from precipitation that they would feel all that different.
To summarise
Hobart= Gijon (Spain)
Melbourne= Barcelona (Spain)
Canberra= Pamplona (Spain)
Adelaide= Majorca (Spanish Island)
Sydney= East London (South Africa)
Perth= Rhodes (Greek Island)
Brisbane= Richards Bay (South Africa)
Darwin= Mambasa (Kenya)
Anyway feel free to add more cities and/or better cities that match the Australian one's i have posted. I'd be keen to see what you guys think
