Ulan-Ude, because it has a modicum of warmth in summer and it's way sunnier

Ulan-Ude is a dream climate of mine in real life, so that one.

Lerwick for not being a cold dry monsoonal hellhole. Pretty low bar. Ulan-Ude is one of the worst inhabited climates on Earth, along with all of Siberia.

Ulan-Ude. Lerwick is miserable for 365 days per year with endless cool temps and pathologically low sunshine hours. Ulan-Ude has brutally long and cold winters, but at least you get warm, sunny summers as payoff (albeit still with cool nights).

Both really suck but I will begrudgingly go with Lerwick. At least the winters won't kill you.

Definitely cold enough for hypothermia. Yes I suppose if you walked around naked or with minimal clothing but with thin jacket and pants you would be fine in Lerwick. In Ulan Ude, there would be periods in the winter you would not even be able to walk outside in regular winter gear for more than an hour. I have been in -30 several times and it was very unpleasant. Ulan Ude has gotten down to -54. No thanks.

Ulan-Ude: worse temps, but like twice the sunshine and actual summer warmth
