This thread is for documenting a (near) record cold event in otherwise a mild winter/season.
Recent examples include Miami having a 50°F high in late December 2022 in what otherwise has been a mild/warm winter, and Mount Washington recently recording -47°F with -108°F wind chill, also in what otherwise has been a mild winter for NE US.
The opposite (i.e. (near) record heat in what otherwise a cool summer/season) also counts here.
Record wet/humid days/period in what otherwise a dry season/year, and vice versa, also applies here.
Apologies if this topic has been done before, if that's the case, the mods/admin could merge this thread into an earlier similar thread.

An example here is the mild winter of 2022-23, punctuated by the coldest December cold snap in years; Christmas Eve had the coldest high in December since 1989 of 30°F (-1°C) and the coldest December lows since 2010 of 18°F (-8°C) for the 24th-26th.*

Another notable example was the mid-Feb 2016 cold blast in NYC, with LGA recording a 1°F low on the 14th

Our wettest day on record (145.4mm in Feb 2005) happened in an otherwise dry year. In fact, that whole decade was dry due to the Millennium drought. Many trees fell down as a result of being weakened by drought - it was chaos.
This isn't about the whole season, but also wanted to mention November 2019. Our record Nov high was broken on the 21st, with a temp of 39.4C. However, that month was actually about a degree below for minima and right on average for maxima. Most of the month + the first half of December was dominated by cool conditions, so that burst of heat was quite the anomaly.

Darwin also had a cool July last year, among the top coolest, between both above average June and August

January was over 9 F (5 C) warmer than average, and December was slightly warmer than average too, but produced the first subzero high in December since 1989 and the coldest December temperature at all since 2013.

This thread is for documenting a (near) record cold event in otherwise a mild winter/season. Recent examples include Miami having a sub-50°F high in late December 2022 in otherwise has been a mild/warm winter, and Mount Washington recently recording -47°F with -108°F wind chill, also in otherwise has been a mild winter for NE US. The opposite (i.e. (near) record heat in otherwise a cool summer/season) also counts here, like the early July 2015 heatwave in London, in IIRC a below average summer. Record wet/humid days/period in otherwise a dry season/year, and vice versa, also applies here. Apologies if this topic has been done before, if that's the case, the mods/admin could merge this thread into an earlier similar thread. Miami didn't have a sub-50°F high, their low max was 50°F even, on 12/25

Doesn’t seem too special, if the winter is say 3 months so chances are even in a mild pattern it’s not going to be above average the whole time. Especially the case here since a lot of times the biggest cold snaps only last 2-3 days leaving plenty of time for average or above average weather

July record high (97 F/36 C) occurred during the coolest July on record (July 2013). That's about all I can think of.

May 1963 had the earliest ever >=97°F high (98°F on May 10), but it was the 4th coldest May on record and saw the latest-in-season freeze on record only 8 days earlier: Not to mention that JJA 1963 was one of the coldest crummers on record, with a JJA mean of 75.6°F, the 4th coldest behind 1967, 1965 and 1966.

is "near record cold/hot" subjective or relative? What's the threshold?
For example summer 2018 was the 4th warmest this Millennium, but June recorded a 2.6C low. Record low since 1959 is -1.5C. Is that close enough?

April 1976 was an interesting month back on LI. It recorded the 2nd coldest, then the 2nd hottest April temperatures ever. The heat record was recorded just 5 days after the cold record, so a very interesting warmup. Otherwise though, it was not very notable, within a degree of average albeit pretty dry.

The Raleigh-Durham area had its coldest winter on record in 1976-77, but that is the same year the winter record high temperature was set.

The Raleigh-Durham area had its coldest winter on record in 1976-77, but that is the same year the winter record high temperature was set. Well, Raleigh broke their winter record high yesterday, so this fact is no longer true. But it still counts as near-record warmth.

Marcelo mentioned in the other thread that the past summer (Dec 2022 - Feb 2023) was the warmest on record for Buenos Aires, in which the coldest Feb low since 1951 was also recorded

In Toronto we've had a very interesting May 2021. We had a summer-like stretch from May 17-26 with a few 30+C highs. Then on May 28 the high was <10C and we saw 0.2cm of snow.
Also Feb 2023, we've had extended warmth on Feb 7-21 with an average high of 6.5C (7-7.5C above seasonal), but just 3-4 days before, on Feb 3-4, it dropped to -21.8C at night, with windchill of close to -40... the actual temperature was far from record-breaking, but the windchill was close.

Winter of 1991-1992 in Kansas City has an overall departure of something like +5.5F.
Yet:
KC record low for the month of November: 1F, November 8, 1991.
Earliest ever 0F reading: December 6. (1950 + 1972)
Absolutely massive outlier.
Also, more snow fell in April 1992 than in the preceding December, January, February, and March combined. (Only by 0.1", but still).
There's also this recent one. Monthly departures in 2020-2021: November +5.7F December +3.5F January +5.1F February -10.4F March +5.7F

October 1947 (pre-ASOS) had seen the earliest sub-40°F low in season ever in an otherwise warm October:

Not "record" but the coldest temp since 2019 (IIRC) in Darwin earlier this morning (13.4°C/56.1°F) occurred during an MTD above average July (and very likely to still finish above average with the forecast for next weekend)
