April is a transitional month in the Northern Territory... for Top Enders its the last gasp of the Northern wet season, although our mates over in the far north east often do OK re rainfall in April with Gulf Lines streaming in from QLD across the Gulf of Carpentaria. Down south in Alice Springs the climate was warmish at the begining of April, but by the end of the month, signs of Autumn are well underway.. The Top End had some good rains inland away from the coast, above average, although the Darwin region was below the long term mean rainfall with only 81.4mm falling on 16 days. Felt wetter but still well below the long term mean of 101.7mm. Gove Airport and the Nhulanbuy town site ( far north eastern Top End ) recorded over 600mm for the month of April, record rainfall for April. Alice Springs rainfall came in at 61.4mm. well above the monthly long term mean of 15.8mm. Rainfall - 81.4mm falling on 16 days ( long term mean 101.7mm ) Highest daily fall - 24.2mm on the 3rd. Max temps - 32.5c av ( long term mean 32.0c ) Highest max - 35.8c on the 1st and 5th. Lowest max - 17.8c on the 15th Min temps - 24.4c av ( long term mean 24.0c ) Highest min - 26.2c on the 6th. Lowest min - 18.6c on the 19th. Rainfall - 64.8mm falling on 6 days ( long term mean 15.8mm ) Highest daily fall - 26.4mm on the 16th Max temps - 27.7c av ( long term mean 28.4c ) Highest max - 35.8c on the 11th and 14th. Lowest max - 17.8c on the 15th. Min temps - 13.2c av ( long term mean 12.6c ) Highest min - 22.4c on the 13th. Lowest min 5.1c on the 30th

Synopsis: Wettest April since 2003 with warmer than normal temps. Check out this subpolar maritime aberration of a day (yep, you read that right, fucking 48°F temps at 4 PM in my fat furry ass!!!), but other than that, this April was pretty good. Ridging brought some glorious warm sunny days, thereafter a series of coastal lows/shortwaves has brought a fair share of rainfall the last week. My PWS has a higher precip total than the AP this month, largely because I got a direct hit by a thundershower on the 14th. jsfiddle.net/nL1yx5uw/Average 2 AM temperature: 60.0°F (15.6°C) Average 8 AM temperature: 60.8°F (16.0°C) Average 2 PM temperature: 70.9°F (21.6°C) Average 8 PM temperature: 65.5°F (18.6°C) Average 2 AM dewpoint: 55.1°F (12.8°C) Average 8 AM dewpoint: 55.3°F (12.9°C) Average 2 PM dewpoint: 54.0°F (12.0°C) Average 8 PM dewpoint: 54.5°F (12.5°C) Max. dewpoint: 71.6°F (22.8°C) on the 5th, 1:29 PM Min. dewpoint: 28.4°F (-2.0°C) on the 18th, 11:08 AM Difference between true daily mean vs. max/min / 2: -0.7°F (-0.4°C) Largest diurnal range: 32.7°F (18.2°C) on the 12th Smallest diurnal range: 5.5°F (3.1°C) on the 24th Mean time of daily high and mean time of daily high after solar noon (not including highs which occurred at night): 3:24 PM (+2 hrs 16 mins) No. precipitation days (>=0.01"): 12 No. precipitation days (>=0.04"): 7 No. precipitation days (>=0.1"): 7 No. precipitation days (>=0.4"): 6 No. precipitation days (>=1"): 3 Max. rainfall rate (1-min. avg.): 6.60"/hr (167.6 mm/hr) on the 14th, 9:56-9:57 AM Max. rainfall rate (10-min. avg.): 4.14"/hr (105.2 mm/hr) on the 14th, 9:51-10:01 AM Max. temperature of measurable precipitation: 75.0°F (23.9°C) on the 30th, 4:12 PM Min. temperature of measurable precipitation: 46.5°F (6.1°C) on the 8th, 7:25 PM Highest barometric pressure: 30.45 in (1031.2 mb) on the 11th Lowest barometric pressure: 29.22 in (989.5 mb) on the 30th ________________________________________________________________________ Monthly departures at New Bern ASOS (relative to 1991-2020 normals): Average high: +2.2°F (+1.2°C) Mean: +2.6°F (+1.4°C) Average low: +3.1°F (+1.7°C) Precipitation: +3.02" (+76.7 mm; 195% of normal) ________________________________________________________________________ New records at New Bern ASOS: None ________________________________________________________________________

It was however quite a bit wetter than usual, with half that rain falling on the night of the 15th-16th. That day also happened to be our wettest since December 2016. This month was once again cloudier than usual, particularly in the first half. The minimum of 2.1c was our coldest April temp since 2009. On an extra note, we've become mediterranean with that rainfall.

Preliminary Summary
I STILL have no internet at the new flat ... So this is an initial description of the wastrel month that was April 2023.
High latitude Northern blocking made it a cool, cloudy wet useless month with barely more than 1 hour of sun at a time. It had the lowest April max temperature in decades. It was so shit even February was better.
Full data will arrive when I FINALLY get a proper internet connection.

Essendon April 2023 Summary:Average max: 20.4°C (-0.6°C) Average mean: 15.6°C (-0.3°C) Average min: 10.8°C (+0.1°C) Max high: 26.8°C (4th) Max low: 16.2°C (27th) Min high: 15.2°C (10th) Min low: 2.5°C (30th) Precipitation: 88.6mm (190.1% of avg. precip) Precip days: 15 Precip days (>1mm): 12 Sun hours: 158.2 hrs (88.6% of avg sun hours) Highest wind gust: 69km/h from the N (27th) Temps were around average, cloudier and wetter than average though which has been a running theme for a while now (hopefully to end quite soon). Not too much variation in temperatures this month, it was quite stable for April. The largest anomaly was the cold morning of the 30th. As it has been pointed out there is a mediterranean flavour to the rainfall pattern in Melbourne so far, however with a dry winter predicted it'll probably end here.

Pretty standard April here, although drier than normal, which I thoroughly enjoyed because April can be pretty wet here some years.

Average precipitation: 38.9mm | Average precipitation days (>0.2mm): 10.0 | Average relative humidity: 54%
This April was significantly wetter than average, mainly due to heavy falls on the night of the 15th-early morning on the 16th. Highs were close to average, while lows were slightly warmer than average. The 2.9°C minimum was the coldest April low since 2013.

April 2023 Crummmmmry The late Sudden Stratospheric Warming was responsible for allowing high pressure cells to float up to the arctic circle like a fart in a bathtub, allowing cool, wet weather and troughing to get stuck over the UK resulting in a terribly consistently cool, damp and drizzly rot fest of an April, with the lowest max temp in years. The month was noted only for is lack of notability - no snow, no warm spells, no cold spells, no sun, no thunder, no hail. Nothing. Just a black hole of useless wankery.

April started cold and ended very cold, but the middle month was glorious and well above normal. Dry and possibly record sunny, (Kotka Rankki on the SE coast recorded 306 hours of sun). Turku missed the warmest air so the record high was a bit disappointing, but nevertheless a very good month despite the late month cold spell.
Highest high: 17.3C (22nd) Highest low: 6.1C (13th) Lowest high: 2.4C (3rd) Lowest low: -9.9C (4th) --- TIED for the all-time coldest April temp at the Artukainen station
