Another day with extreme heat in Spain, especially in Eastern and Northern regions in terms of anomalies, including at least three all-time records broken from stations with long P.O.R. Bilbao: 44.0C (previous one 42.0C set in 1947) Tortosa: 43.9C (station existing in the same place since 1920, previous record 43.0C set in 1982) Santander: 41.4C (previous record 40.2C set in 1942 but from a different location; Port station also broke its all-time high; 37.3C vs 35.6C set in 1953)
No records among long term stations in Barcelona, but some very notable readings.
El Prat Airport: 26.7C / 35.1C Maritime Museum: 26.6C / 34.7C AEMET HQ Observatory: 27.2C / 33.7C Barcelona Port: 28.8C / 36.1C El Raval: 29.1C / 35.7C (Located on a rooftop, so not standard) Barcelona Zoo: 26.2C / 35.7C (Very close to El Raval station, see how contrasting the minimum is) University City: 27.7C / 38.4C Fabra Observatory: 29.5C / 38.5C (at 400 masl. on a Hill just outside the urban area)

Btw today's highest readings were the following: - Max: 43.5°C/110°F in Villariès - Min: 30.3°C/87°F in Revel
The two locales are near Toulouse, with daily means around 35°C/95°F in the region. First time I see a 30°C+ low outside the Med area. That kind of shit in an oceanic climate!

Fark rozenn talk about a next level penising (that's on par with the typical subarctic maritime Raw-me/Siciloids gradient), I'd lose my mind and be in sheer rage if I were in your shoes.

The nail in the coffin was today's storms. A double whammy really.
Btw nice dews today in the Med, up to around 26°C/79°F.

A backdoor cold front passed through yesterday, bringing the lowest humidity of the month. Clear skies and light winds allowed the temp at ACRAWX/Allapattah Flats to drop to 69.2 F (20.7 C), while coastal areas remained in the low to mid 80s due to persistent NE winds and building stratocumulus clouds. The low at Archbold Biological Station's automated station in Highlands County was 68 F (not the official COOP reading). Low here was 73.3 F (22.9 C), slightly below normal for late August. That wouldn't be noteworthy in a normal August, but there have only been two days with lows below that this month.

Southern Hemisphere Winter Record As Bolivia Hits 45C ( source: Weatherzone ) Parts of South America have endured an extreme winter heatwave this week, with one town in Bolivia registering the equal highest winter temperature ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. A large blocking high pressure system over the South Atlantic Ocean caused a hot air mass to build over the northern half of South America over the past fortnight. Earlier this week, this pool of hot air spread into central parts of South America as northerly winds developed ahead of an approaching low pressure trough. ^^Image: Modelled surface air temperature on August 22, showing temperatures in the mid-40s in Bolivia, and several areas north of the equator. Source: ClimateReanalyzer.org ^^Image: Same map as above, but instead showing temperature anomalies, which highlight how far above (red) and below (blue) these temperatures are for this time of year. Source: ClimateReanalyzer.org This surge of heat caused temperatures to soar more than 10ºC above average for this time of year, reaching as high as 45ºC at Villamontes in Bolivia on August 22. According to climate historian Maximiliano Herrera, this was the equal highest winter temperature on record in the Southern Hemisphere. One day later, the temperature at Nueva Asunción in Paraguay reached 41.9ºC. This was also a new national winter record for Paraguay, says Herrera. And it’s not just South America that has seen extreme winter temperatures in the past week, with parts of South Africa, Botswana and Namibia also experiencing record-challenging winter warmth. Australia may also join the list of Southern Hemisphere continents that have places experiencing record-breaking winter heat this month. In Western Australia, Kalgoorlie is forecast to reach 32ºC this Saturday and Sunday. Kalgoorlie’s highest winter temperature on record was 32.0ºC on August 30, 2006. However, it has never had two 32ºC days in winter, with records dating back to 1907.

Interesting day today, midnight high of 73 (23 c) and then the whole afternoon and evening stayed around 60 (15-16 c). Very cool temps for midday in August.
Also of interest was the steady drizzly rain all day. No thunder or lightning as is typical of summer but instead just March/October like drizzle.
0.84” (21 mm) fell which brings the month to 5.19” (142 mm), making it the 3rd wettest August.
The year is already the 9th wettest now with 4 months still to go. Barring a very wet fall, will likely finish as the 3rd or 4th wettest year.

Excellent points on ECMWF having a clear hot/dry bias (due to too much mixing), albeit not as much as GFS

Had some nice thunderstorms Sunday and Monday. Yesterday even had 2, along with a sunshower that produced a rainbow.
With that rainfall, August is up to 5.61” (142 mm) and has moved up to 2nd wettest. The year is now 6th wettest overall.

So, this is now official: June was the warmest of the three summer months. This must be quite rare.

Brownsville tied its all-time record high last week. Brownsville is interesting in being probably the only CONUS station that has a record high in March. Now it also has a record high in August, which is far more normal.
