My son and his family are in Weipa ( far North QLD ) atm. They have a wedding to attend on Saturday, and the airfares from Darwin were something like $3500.00 return ( no direct flights.... gotta fly to Cairns, then west and north to Weipa ) and then car hire on top so they drove over there. And because my young bloke has his wife and son with him, he couldn't do the isolated outback route... its a 1000klm shorter, but also a 1000klm of dirt roads, and in any case, after the record March floods in the Gulf country, some of the roads out that way are still closed. Took 'em 2 days to Cairns ( they did 2 nights in Cairns, then drove to Weipa yesterday 850klm ( 250klm of dirt ) So the route from Darwin if; A/- you are a pussy, B/- you drive a Mitsubishi Triton or a Jeep. C/- have the wife and 5 year old with you... The route they were gunna take, except for the (apparently ) road closures at Normanton with the bridge washed away ( be Xmas before repairs finished ) The route any normal single adventurist Territorian ( sans family ) with a Toyata 4WD woulda taken...a 1000klm shorter, but a lot of isolated outback travel.... DARWIN: MOUNT ISA: HUGHENDON: CAIRNS: WEIPA:

All of those climates are excellent by tropical standards. Iโm going with Hughendon.

Hughendon, but a vote for Mount Isa because it's a close choice.

My son and his family overnighted in Hughenden ( 1300klm from Weipa ).... its been a record hot June there in that part of inland North QLD so far in 2023.

Cairns
More-evenly distributed precipitation than Darwin with a pleasant cool season to boot. And better heat potential too!

Cairns earns my vote. Plenty of summer thunderstorms and downpours, while still having alot of winter sunshine; is not too shabby for a tropical climate. All of them are too warm year-round IMO
