August... the last winter month in the Antipodes... but in the Deep North it is still normally the depths of the dry season across the Top End and even in Alice Springs it's still a winter month. August 2023 has been the second hottest at Darwin Airport ( mean max temps ) since records began in 1941. 33.3c mean max is in the 95th %-ile on record; the mean mins were also above average by 0.5c, despite there being 6 mins below 20c for the month. And not surprisinly, zero rainfall throughout the City and 'Burbs. So thats a full 4 callendar months sans recordable rain.... it's dry as a witches tit here atm ! August/Sept is our bushfire danger season, with the bush and local grassland areas fully cured and gusty south easterlies, low dp's and mid 30c temps the norm at this time of the year. The southern and central NT regions have also experienced extreme fire danger.... Alice Springs has also recorded zero rain for the month of August, and has had an exceptionly warm month, with the mean mins being 0.7c above average and the mean maxs 3.9c above average ! The 26.7 mean max temp for August is also in the 95th %-ile since 1940, and the second highest since 28.1c mean in 2009 ! Rainfall - 0.0mm ( long term mean 4.6mm- median 0.0mm ) Highest daily fall - 0.0mm Max temps - 33.3c av ( long term mean 31.5c ) Highest max - 35.3c on the 24th and 25th. Lowest max - 30.8c on the 17th Min temps - 20.8c av ( long term mean 20.3c ) Highest min - 24,2c on the 5th. Lowest min - 19.1c on the 21st and 22nd. Rainfall - 0.0mm falling on 0 days ( long term mean 8.3mm, median 0.9mm ) Highest daily fall - 0.0mm Max temps - 26.7c av( long term mean 22.8c ) Highest max 32.4c on the 16th. Lowest max 22.2c on the 18th. Min temps - 6.6c av ( long term mean 5.9c ) Highest min 18.9c on the 17th. Lowest min 2.9c on the 26th

August 2023 Summary SE Sheffield August Baugust. Nuffing interesting about this month. Everything was as close to average as possible though sun was prolly below average (Edit; yes it was dull as fuck). Max temp was ordinary, rain was average and all frontal or non-thundery showers, beginning and end was pleasantly cooler and the middle was warm and humid. Nout more to be said on the matter.

Synopsis: Another very solid month with ridging that brought record-shattering heat to the southern Plains extending up to here at times, with epic and legendary heat/dewpoint combos occurring August 13-15. A weak frontal system, followed by Tropical Storm Idalia, tracking its way through the Carolinas before moving offshore, brought the monthly rainfall tally to near-normal levels despite most of the month being dry as a motherfucken bone (in terms of precip). Nonetheless however, I did see some decent lightning shows before, such as when weakening thunderstorms came here from the NW to abruptly end the August 13-15 heatwave. Essendon August 2023 Summary:Average max: 15.7°C (+0.7°C) Average mean: 11.7°C (+0.9°C) Average min: 7.6°C (+1.0°C) Max high: 21.0°C (25th) Max low: 12.3°C (4th, 20th) Min high: 12.1°C (17th) Min low: -0.1°C (16th) Precipitation: 24.8mm (57.0% of avg. precip) Precip days: 11 Precip days (>1mm): 6 Sun hours: 155.1 hrs (92.2% of avg sun hours) Highest wind gust: 78km/h from the N (4th) An above average August, continuing the recent trend of warmer than average months. It was drier than average, and slightly cloudier. We also received our first (and probably only) frost of the year this month, along with our solitary 20C max this winter meaning that this August was more variable than the other winter months. However, this is fairly normal for this part of Australia.

We did record two frosts though which made the month a bit more interesting, and somehow fell just short of 20c despite the overall mildness. It was drier and slightly cloudier than normal but I recall around 4mm that wasn't recorded one day, so the monthly rainfall total is more like 42mm instead.

Perth August summary (Late Winter)
Mean max temp: 20.4°C (+1.3°C) Mean Min temp: 8.4°C (0)
Max temp: 29.7°C Min temp: 3.7°C
Rainfall mm: 75mm ( - 48.2mm) Rainy days over 1mm: 6 days ( -7.1 days)
Sunshine hours: 230.4 (+7.2 hours) Afternoon humidity: 53%
This month was warmer and significantly drier than average for a Perth August. The last week of consistent +20°C temperatures right up until 30°C pushed the average max to over 20°C. Rainfall is the main takeaway with Perth recieving less than half the number of Rainy days on average and about 60% of overall quantity. In terms of sunshine hours once again this is where Perth doesnt vary much in regards to it's averages. It's usually pretty consistent

Average August conditions (1991-2020)
Average high: 15.2°C | Daily mean: 10.5°C | Average low: 5.8°C
Average precipitation: 38.0mm | Average precipitation days (>0.2mm): 15.3 | Average relative humidity: 59%
Another warmer and drier than average month, rounding off one of the mildest winters on record. We managed to record one freeze and several sub 2°C lows, which is more than you can say for the other winter months. Highs, however, were persistently warm, with every maximum temperature being at least 13°C. This has never happened in in the 80 years of records at the Laverton site.
Overall, this winter just felt like a 3 month long extension of May. Here's hoping next winter is more wintry.

August was a bit warmer than normal and exactly twice as wet as normal. Early month saw a brief hot spike with a new all-time August record high. The last three weeks were utterly boring, essentially the same weather every day and very rainy. Noteworthy is that the temp didn't fall below 10C once in August, something which happened the last time in 2006.
