Airport - 28.8mm Noony - 61.6mm How does a small 100K city like Darwin have so many weather stations? They are not all in the metro area... the metro area full AWS's are the Airport, Darwin Harbour and the new one ( this year ) at East Point. All the others on that list are 40 to 140 klm away inland and coastal. In fact the local weather nerds are somewhat surprised at the AWS siting at East Point rather than 25 kilmeters away at the satellite city of Palmerston with a population of +30,000 and no weather station. Palmerston is hotter and wetter during the 'build up' months than Darwin Airport, and they get better and more storm activity. These maps show the metro AWS's and some of the inland rural full BoM AWS's

How does a small 100K city like Darwin have so many weather stations? If anything, I think having a high density of weather stations is a good thing. The more coverage we have of microclimates and local variations, the better. I also think every town of at least perhaps 5K should have a weather station. Every county should have at least one. Mid-sized cities should have several.
