Had below normal rainfall last month here despite El Nino (more than 2" below normal) and still in exceptional drought. Looks like we could finally get some significant drought improvement in January. Storm systems could bring substantial rainfall tomorrow night and Saturday night and NOAA's January map shows above normal precip pretty likely for Louisiana and points eastward. Here's NOAA's temp map for January.

Got rainfall from multiple systems here as well, but they've been underachieving for inland LA and other parts of the deep South lately. I haven't had more than an inch from a system since Nov 30-Dec 1.

Some cool temps in western Cuba, reaching 5.9 C in Tapaste, Mayabeque province this morning. Nothing close to record breaking for them, but still faring much better (cooler) than south FL during this cool snap.

tommyFL Yucatán Peninsula where I was staying on December 31had some notable cool temps too. 79ºF/55ºF in Cancún and 84ºF/48ºF inland in Timizín.
Flew back to the US today, but another cool night expected, forecast around 50ºF again in parts of Yucatán state. Nice diurnals and highs back up above average.

Nikkaluokta dropped to -40,5'C last night, first -40'C of the year/season. Umeå airport dropped down to a whopping -30.7'C, the first time below -30'C since 2012. The temp has likely dropped since then and a nearby roadside station is sitting at 35.1'C as we speak. Even the uni station is sitting at -25'C right now.

Charlwood in Surrey had 10 hours of sunshine in December. What an awful year for weather 2023 was.

Charlwood in Surrey had 10 hours of sunshine in December. Awesome. Quite windy here today. Up to 100 km/h (62 mph) in SE suburban Melun, and 132 km/h (82 mph) at the top of the Eiffel tower.

Charlwood in Surrey had 10 hours of sunshine in December. What an awful year for weather 2023 was. This has a mix of raw values and true values. Heathrow for example has 21 hours raw and 22.4 hours true. I'm not sure which sensor is used at Charlwood, but 10 hours would be their dullest December on record either way. For Heathrow, it was the 3rd cloudiest December on record.

This was expected, it's December and a strong El Niño, hardly a noteworthy or anomalous pattern.

This was expected, it's December and a strong El Niño, hardly a noteworthy or anomalous pattern. Uh...yeah, nah. Ridiculous comment, if it's the record warmest December for large areas of the country, it's 100% noteworthy and anomalous regardless of whether it's an El Niño.

While this may be an extreme example (kinda like December 2015 was, though obviously different patterns), but El Ninos are correlated with warmer than normal Decembers - especially for strong, east-based ones though.

Benfxmth You just proved my point. The pattern isn't surprising, but the anomalies are. The anomalies around Minnesota were over 4x what is shown in that map of analog years. Downplaying it is a bit odd.

Extremes in AU on the first day of 2024: Karijini, Newman and Paraburdoo notable given the modest altitude of the sites.

Expectation vs. reality for a day where the forecast is for "sunny" weather in January... Expectation (the forecast on the night before): Reality (the actual weather):

A new all-time low for Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka (station started in 1888). Also the coldest January temperature in Sweden since 1999.

Downplaying it is a bit odd. I agree, to be fair I'm not surprised that this December was going to be warm af (at least CONUS-wise). But yes, no two winters (regardless of ENSO or any other climate driver) are exactly the same.
