Looks incredibly similar to some places in Umeå, so strange Strange. Lots of oaks here, you don't have those. What pics in particular? Oh I wasn't referring to exact tree species, more the general appearance. Dense growth of thin spindly deciduous trees that look similar enough to our birches, bird cherries and sallow trees, and then in some images these deciduous trees are interspersed with large pine trees. Honestly pretty much all images look like they could've been taken in a couple of places in Umeå.

Couple pics from Fontainebleau, about 50 km SE of Paris. 9/-3°C (49/27°F) and high ceiling today. Flanners Beach, part of the Croatan Nat'l Forest this afternoon. Temp was approx. 74°F with dewpoints in the 66-68°F range.
Those are dews I associate with high summer. Hard to imagine such humidity looking at pics of bare trees.

Yep, sunny warmth in the middle of winter is rather atypical with 60s dewpoints too, felt much more like a spring day except with bare trees and not much blooming. Absolutely rediculous warmth, I had an 80°F high at my home PWS earlier that afternoon (AP 81°F, 1°F short of the Jan record high).

And I was on a trip. This trip was to Serbia, Belgrade. The place where the Sava river flows into the Danube. Sava is on the left, Danube is behind. Saturday, in the park near the fortress. Temperature was about 14c, so it is above average.

February has been a beautiful summer month so far here in Tamaki Makaurau. Highs in the mid 20s, more sunshine and less humidity than January .

I don't think I've ever seen this before. It's like there are small icicle balls at the end of each twig. Yesterday there was super thick frost/snow on the tree twigs and it must've melted into icicles in the sun. Every tree is like this.

Jiri to Lukla This section of Jiri to Lukla is much less travelled than further up the trails; where new bus routes and upgraded airport capacities have allowed for more frequent and easier access at locations that are closer to the main passes. Me and my mate had the time available and wanted to experience a quieter side of Nepalese hiking. I loved this section so much that I am definitely going to go back and do more lowland hiking (if the opportunity presents itself). November 22, 2023 Jiri main street. Arrived from Kathmandu around 2pm, a fairly un-bumpy bus for a Nepalese trip! November 23, 2023 A sunny, cool morning becoming fairly warm and breezy NE (from memory, around 16-18C) Walked up a series of local steps onto a ridgeline with splendid views to the south. Over the ridge to the northern flank, first look at the mighty Himalayan peaks. Back into the valley with a short, steep 500-600m descent. The bridge to enter Shivalaya. A 1000m+ ascent to Deurali pass, stayed at the top where it was cold, windy and foggy! View easterly to the next days walk November 24th: A sunny, pleasant day with my mate who was whinging due to cardio, had to persuade him fairly harshly to keep going lol (he had a knee injury he had not disclosed to anyone and had not sorted treatment so I was pissed off at that rather the cardio which he would naturally develop over the first few days). Flat and following a major river Lamjura La, this pass takes 1-1.5 days to climb and you stay halfway up. Pretty much a 2000m ascent. Sometime in the afternoon of the 24th. November 25th Lamjura La ascent, beautiful forests (Rhodehedron?) First snow as we approached the pass (3500m ish) A 900m descent down to junbesi: Beautiful forests Cloud moving in as we approached Junbesi, its very common for afternoons to become quite cloudy, and hills/mountains to be shrouded in cloud. After a long day we settled into a tiny village, clocked in fog and the darkening of the little landscape we could see in the fading evening light; I grabbed a large dinner and got into my sleeping bag to keep warm. I'll post days 4-6 to Lukla this afternoon.

To Lukla November 26th, 2023 Woke up and after a hot, delicious breakfast; started on our way to Jubing, at 1600m. The day would involve a short descent to Solu River before a steep climb to Ringmu Pass; then a ~1400m descent down past Nunthala to . Me and my friend got separated (due to some confusion on both of our parts) and enjoyed the gradually warming weather. Morning sun, light winds, pleasant day. Over Ringmu pass and back down Subtropical forests at 1600m Guesthouse view, and the trek up the mountains we'd make tomorrow A quick aside; we had already been well ahead of planned pace. And my friend basically didn't think ahead and needed to get money out at Lukla, so we decided to walk from Jubing to Lukla in 2 days...yes we could've done it in one extremely long day with night hiking; but we were ahead of time and genuinely enjoying the trip (for the mostpart). November 27th, 2023 Up from Jubing to Paiya. A long yet not super steep climb, enjoyable in the morning sun. Afternoon cloud and a beautiful sunset. A short morning climb to Kharikola, where we started to notice we'd joined the main crew heading to Base Camp. There are a few points where buses drop people off and they start hiking; we saw a lot more rubbish, pack horses, guesthouses and just general disturbance. Picturesque town of Kharikola Climbing Climbing more Some of the mountain roads you experience November 28th, 2023 We had a larger day, walking 10km (but very up and down) to Lukla before a lunch of cake, coffee and chocolate. Before getting our passes and descending to Toktok (i don't make these names lol). Cloud had developed on the afternoon of the 27th and persisted for much of the 28th, first as low to mid level with associated light rain and drizzle; then clearing to high cloud. Perspective is a bit weird on this one, about 2500m from floor to peak! Once we passed Lukla, it was a pleasant descent in nice weather, calm and cloudy; down to the valley floor to re-connect with the trail. Suspension bridges and paved tracks, with towns every 1-2km. This is the most touristy and well trodded trail...potentially in all of Nepal. November 29th, 2023 A frosty and sunny day, coldest morning so far of probably -3C/-4C. sexy glacial till Namche Bazaar, rest stop and where we'd spend 2 days acclimatising. It was also the first place i tried to run....here's my strava at 3500m (fucking help). It was difficult to run anything more than down or flat, once there was even a gentle incline you could really feel it. I did get a bit lost and did stop for a bit and see the views. So let's say 7 to 7:10/km...but still it was fucked.

Namche Bazaar to Lobuche Dec 1 - 5 December 1 - Namche Bazaar to Pangboche (4100m) After an acclimatisation day in Namche, we headed the 16km to Pangboche. Which would feature beautiful forests, a significant climb and a beautiful bridge crossing. As well as our first proper views of Ama Dablam. A cloudy start As we climbed the first proper ascent of the day, we looked back at our progress during the morning. December 2 - Pangboche to Dingboche (4400m) A shorter day, used as a "half acclimatisation" day, we hiked and were finished by late morning; I used the spare time in the afternoon to hike another 300-400m above Dingboche with spectacular views. Morning light hitting the Nuptse Wall Panorama from Dingboche Ama Dablam Looking east towards Chukung (and Chukung Lake) where we'd be walking the day after. December 3 - Dingboche to Chukung (5100m) Now very high up, we proceeded slowly and I honestly just enjoyed the sights, walked fairly slow and appreciated the place I was in. Nupste Wall in all its glory December 4 - Acclimatisation Day (climbing Chukung Ri I would NOT call it a rest day). Up to 5546m December 5- Kongma La We climbed to Kongma La pass A beautiful sunny day, desolate landscapes Nearing the pass, icy and slushy At the top of the pass, we went anticlock-wise and actually experienced a more normal, conventional climb...i feel very sorry for those who approach from the clockwise direction (which we descended down and you'll see how it fucked it was). Beginning to descend This is from the bottom of the screen climb....brutal to climb and dangerous to descend A steep descent looking over the glacial till that we'd have to content with later. Slippery, unstable ground, crumbling rocks. Mixed with icy, cold weather and wind. Crossing glaciers is a slow, unlikeable experience and you've got to have your wits about you at all times. Lobuche
