2023 was about 1Β°F (0.6Β°C) warmer than the 1991-2020 average, coming in at 16th warmest out of 133 years. Precipitation was within an inch of normal, but since 2021 and 2022 were drier than normal, this year wound up being the wettest since 2020. We had a super wet early July, and then the rain mostly shut off until September. August had quite a few hot and dry days, but it wasn't as bad of a month as July 2022. We had a few nice snowy days in late January and early February, but that was it as far as winter weather goes. Our coldest day of the second half of 2023 came in October. That has never happened outright before, but in late 2020 the coldest high occurred in both October and December. The most impactful weather we had were three tornado threats, one in late February, one in mid April, and one in mid May. A tornado in late February was an EF-2 and passed within a mile of my apartment, and one in May was an EF-1 and passed about a mile and a half from my apartment. I could hear the howling from the February tornado, and the wind from the associated severe thunderstorm made my windows rattle. The one in May knocked out power to my apartment for a couple hours. The February one blocked my commute to work for a few days, and damage from the storm took about six months to clean up. I also saw one inch (2.5 cm) hail one morning around 5. I think we got smaller hail another time as well. This was the worst year for severe weather since I got here in 2016. Here is the annual weatherbox reposted from the December thread.

Zagreb 2023 Summary:January: Very mild, very wet (rainy) and without any significant cold. February: Dominated by the high pressure, sunny, mild and calm - a rather comfortable month. March: A fairly comfortable March, not much exciting weather happening in this month though. April: Gaypril was colder than avg, felt chilly, rainy and cloudy. Not much warmer than March. May: Just when I thought that the bad Gaypril weather was over, May-Gay ensued. Gay had worse weather than Gaypril, cloudy, rainy af and boring, just gay. June: June was dotted with T-storms and fairly humid, ended up being near average in terms of temperatures. Surprisingly dry too, must be that local downpours of these T-storms missed the station. July: Very humid month, with great T-storm activity. Zagreb had the strongest storm on record on July 19th, with strong winds and lightning, causing floods of the streets and houses, with some casualties unfortunately. The only summer month that was somewhat warmer than average August: Cold start of August with a good amount of rain. The second half brought the warmer and drier weather, in the end making this month about average temp-wise. September: Great month, extended summer weather into the fall with plenty of sun. Ended up being the 2nd warmest September on record. October: Another great month, Indian summer for the first half of the month. Most of the month felt like May, warm and sunny. The warmest October on record. November: A fairly decent November, with a rather wet first half, and with decent sun and some fog as per usual. December: Colder and wetter first half, warmer and drier second half with a good amount of sun. Ended up being warmer than average (+2.6C). YEAR: The warmest year on record (+1.5 C) surpassing 2022 (13.2 C), the 2nd wettest year on record (+346.1 mm) and with decent sun surplus (+226 h). The most warmth surplus came from winter and fall (the warmest fall for the country on record), spring was bang on average and summer was a bit warmer than average.
Here is the summary for Split, our 2nd biggest city:
Anomalies: High: 21.1 C (+0.9)
Mean: 17.9 C (+1.0 C)
Low: 15.0 C (+ 1.2 C)
Precip: 965.8 mm (+165.2 mm)
Sun: 2686 h (-13h)
The 2nd warmest year on record, wetter with sunshine hours near average.

Tied 1921 for the warmest year on record. Warmest summer on record by 1.2F. Only month with below average temps was April. Set all time record high in August with max of 110F reached twice. Didn't make the top 10 driest years, but was close. I hope we never get another month even close to this past August. RECORDS TIED/BROKEN IN 2023 (numerous daily records in August)

2023 was the warmest on record, beating 2012 by 0.3F. It was not a good year to be a cold lover. Summer wasn't bad except for the 101F day in August and a few hot days in early September. Only 9 days reached 90F and 6 of those were 90 or 91. Winter was much warmer than normal, and the other seasons were average or above. Lots of above-average lows, the lamest way to set temperature records. More detailed summary coming later, maybe, I haven't started. This was also borderline Dfa/Cfa for the year with the coldest month average only 31.7F/-0.2C. Cfa years have happened with the -3C isotherm, but never with 0C.
The same summary for Madison. 3rd warmest on record there despite the same deviation (+2.9F).

For Hong Kong in 2023:One of the warmest years in Fragrant Harbour on record (though I have only been there twice). It was 1ΒΊC above the normal, with 343.3 mm surplus (literally in just 2 months) and marginally sunnier than normal (+36.2 hr). I am just realising how warm those damn nights are in HK! January- A relatively warm and dry month; thanks to a weaker northeast monsoon. A fair amount of cold drizzle intermixed with periods of thin clouds and strong fog (visibility dropped to 100 m on the 13th). February- Significantly warmer, sunnier and drier than usual; already technically considered a 'tropical month.' Misty, mild and cloudy periods alternate with sunny and warm periods. March- A partly (rather than mostly) cloudy, warm month; and already getting humid! Almost all rainfall was recorded after the 25th (precursor to the monsoon). April- Slightly warmer and cloudier than normal; with lots of showers towards the end of the month. Still only half as much precipitation as the normal (153 mm). May- Still drier than usual, with plenty of squally thunderstorms and showers. Summer has begun here. June- Thunderstorm warnings almost every day, and was warmer than normal. One heavy rainfall period between the 13th and 17th. July- Solidly warmer and drier than average, due a strong subtropical ridge reducing rainfall and slightly increasing sunshine. August- Very similar to July; but was also fairly cloudy and foggy on several days. September- Strongly affected by Category 2 Typhoon Saola (1st and 2nd) and torrential rainfall from a trough (7-8th); bringing over 1 metre of rainfall into the city despite a dry end (21st to 31st). October- Much cloudier and wetter than usual, and was impacted by Typhool Koinu on the 8th. The 9th recorded 369.7 mm, the highest daily rainfall on record for October. November- Warmer, sunnier and drier than normal; thanks to a weaker northeastern monsoon. Good weather conditions for tourism, especially between the 19th to 28th. December- Warmer, cloudier and drier than normal; with significant influence from the Siberian High causing frequent cloud cover and drizzle.

January and December were both top 10 warmest! Spring and summer very average in terms of temps, autumn warmer again. December was just weird, with an average low warmer than that of November. Nasty crummer drought as well; May and June were both top 10 driest, and the only reason July looks wet was because of a couple of big rain events. Between the absurdly warm winter and the absurdly dry May and June, 2023 was Madison's first Csa year on record! 3rd warmest year on record overall, behind only 1931 and 2012.
