El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, or the Royal Road of the Interior Land, was an important highway in New Spain. It was the highway between the capital of New Spain, Mexico City, to San Juan Pueblo in New Mexico, in the frontier.

The route is well above sea level; most of the cities the route passes through are over 4000 feet (1220 meters) above sea level.
