Inspired by Union General Sherman's campaign in late 1864 to 'make Georgia howl'.... Union troops left Atlanta in mid November 1864 and captured Savannah on 21st Dec 1864. Sherman's 'bummers' engaged in a deliberate 'scorched earth' policy of destruction throughout Georgia and during the later invasion of South Carolina and North Carolna whereby his Army lived off the land they captured and destroyed all property they couldn't use. Regarded as the first instance of 'total warfare' and was a template for the German and Russian forces on the Eastern Front in 1941-1945. I'm interested in places on the coast and inland climatically somewhat and have had a look-see for Atlanta and Savannah and compared them to some AU coastal cities and some places 4 or 5 hours inland So climatically the stats for a coastal site ( Savannah ) and an inland site ( Atlanta ) SAVANNAH: ATLANTA: Some AU places a similar distance inland from the coast and generally not north/south so the latitudes are similar. Adelaide and Mildura: ADELAIDE: MILDURA: Melbourne and Horsham: MELBOURNE: HORSHAM: Perth and Kalgoorlie: PERTH: KALGOORLIE: Sydney and Dubbo: SYDNEY: DUBBO: Brisbane and Goondiwindi: BRISBANE: GOONDIWINDI: Darwin and Gunbalunya: DARWIN: GUNDALUNYA: So whaddya recKon ? Do you prefer coastal or 300klm-500klm inland sies climatically ?

Hard to make a decision here. Inland and coastal cities are different in the US and AUS. For the US, I prefer the coast. For Australia, I prefer inland ones.

Let's see.
- Atlanta/Brunswick, Brunswick is superior, warmer both in winter and summer
- Adelaide/Mildura, similar temps but Mildura wins for less drizzly light precip and more sun
- Melbourne/Horsham, easily Horsham
- Perth/Kalgoorlie, Kalgoorlie wins for hotter summers
- Sydney/Dubbo, Dubbo wins for hotter summers
- Brisbane/Goondiwindi, Goondiwindi wins for hotter summers. Both are good though
- Darwin/Gundalunya, Gundalunya wins for greater seasonality tempwise.
Verdict: of these, inland climates are generally superior so it gets my vote

Hmm: - Atlanta for shorter summers - Adelaide for being wetter - Melbourne for more intense rainfall - Perth for milder temps - Sydney for milder temps - Goondiwindi for cooler nights - Darwin for storms
5 coastal, 2 inland = coastal

Atlanta over Savannah for being cooler, and all the Australian coastal climates for being wetter (and cooler in the case of Darwin)
