40N/S and sea level seems like it would have plenty of inoffensive temperate climates, and I bet most of you could find a decent climate there, whether that's in the Mediterranean or the US Midwest. But I imagine these climates, while they have their fans, are less popular. Going from west to east, we first have Fort Bragg, USA, which has the coolest summers for the latitude (at low elevation) and is a boring cool climate year-round. Next, we have Balkanabat, Turkmenistan, which is a desert climate with the hottest summers but fairly typical winters for the latitude. We then have Dandong, China, which has the coldest winters for the latitude and very wet summers. Finally, we have Akita, Japan, which is one of the wettest, cloudiest, and snowiest climate for the latitude. So how would you rank these? Do you think there's a worse climate at 40N/S and sea level than any of these?

Balkanabat is the least bad out of these, as dry as it is

Fort Bragg for the lack of extremes

Datong and Hohhot have much colder winters than Dandong.
Though there is no climate data for these places, theoretically the wettest places at 40ยฐN are some of the mountain villages in Rize province of Northeastern Turkey.

I only included sea level climates here. Rize being wetter is a good point though, even if it's milder and less snowy.

Akita is easily the best and probably gets a C. The others suck for different reasons

Fort Bragg for me, as anemic as it is. Then probably Balkanabat > Dandong > Akita

Fort Bragg. Although insanely boring it is the most comfortable and least aggravating.

Balkanabat. Summers are a little too hot (especially minimums) and it's too dry but it's easily the best out of these options. Winters look nice.
Also I'm balkan.

Changing my vote to Dandong.
Better summers and the winters temps are the best. Akita gets more snow but it'd be way too slushy and piss me off.

Balkanabat
Too dry but it doesn't have nasty cold winters or nasty cold crummers. Fort Bragg would be a great counterexample for all the "California has the perfect climate, so warm year-round" types - a myth that, in my experience, is even perpetuated by some Californians themselves.

Dandong. June is a good summer month, and winter temps are OK. Could use more even precip pattern like all of northeast China. Akita is just too wet, cloudy, and not cold enough in winter. The snow would keep falling but with those temps it must be wet and slushy all the time. Turpan would be a good contender but it's at 43N instead of 40. Nobody lives in the middle of the desert at 40N in that area and I don't blame them. I found a spot at 39N south of Turpan but it's at 900m elevation so summer isn't as hot. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruoqiang_County. 36/20C July, -1/-13 January, only 35mm precip a year.
