As someone who lives in a climate almost like Wilmington, I can safely say that it is undisputably subtropical.

Wilmington averages 0.9 inches of snow a year. Why do you guys only cherry-pick extreme episodes for the American climates? Why do you insist on non-subtropical climates being subtropical when they clearly aren't? A real subtropical climate is something like Taunggyi or Mexico City.

That makes the subtropical and continental (and subarctic and polar) zones utterly meaningless. Pretty much. What's NC, SC, AR etc. then? Continental? Ridiculous.
Temperate...

Everyone knows that “snow and ice” are not chief characteristics of Wilmington’s winter climate.
Frost and ice are occasional throughout the winter, and they don’t stop a climate from being SUBtropical.
I’m not sure why you’d just pretend what a climate is like, greysrigging

Temperate... Cfa is in fact temperate, along with the Med and Oceanic climates, at least by Koppen.

Temperate climates encompass places like Atlanta, Wyalong, Wilmington, Changsha, Shanghai, NYC, Rome, etc. Places like Jacksonville, Xiamen, and Houston are in the transitional zone between temperate and "subtropical". These fake subtropical climates are much different from actual subtropical climates lmao. Y'all got your heads fucked by Köppen...

Houston gets occasional snow too, apparently our mate greysrigging would discard Houston being a subtropical climate too.
Why would anybody make such a small window for a climate type?

I'm not that interested in that tired old subtropical debate, though I'll say that the occasional snow or cold snap isn't be all-end all for a climate's subtropicality, summer temps matter as well.

I would say they both count, but barely. I think median annual snowfall <0.1" (0.25 cm) is a good approximate boundary of the subtropical zone in the US.

If frost or snow automatically disqualifies a climate, then the subtropical zone is really narrow and not worth having a classification. Annual mean in Wilmington is halfway between Minneapolis and Darwin, seems pretty reasonably for subtropical—mid way between continental and tropical.

So why not call it subcontinental as opposed to subtropical ? Seems like frost and snow has substantially more to do with çontinentality than the Tropics ? As in I don't see too many swaying palms and flowering Jacaranda trees in those snowy pics of Wilmington... just sayin'....

The adoption of any type of climate classification as some sort of standard has surely destroyed the critical thinking ability of many.
Subtropical should be near-tropical with tropical-like patterns for a large portion of the year, not just a warmer version of the same exact continental climate found all the way up the east coast of North America.
