Below the data of the Neos Kosmos WMO station located in Downtown Athens within the southernmost area of the Municipality of Athens. 15 years POR and for its entire time series it registers a stunning 20.2°C average annual temperature. It's 1.6ºF warmer than the standard 1991-2020 normals on Wikipedia for downtown Athens which I presume comes from the same station. Feasible I guess, but lows specifically warmed over 3ºF from the 1991-2020 to the 2010-2024 period. Did the station change location during this time? I'm curious.

The Thiseio Downtown Athens station that you see in wikipedia is an A class Stevenson Screen station atop the hill of Nymphs. It has been operational since 1842 and has been at the same position from 1890. It is a fully manned station 24/7 (4 NOA staff in rotation oversee it daily) and it is not allowed to change location as per Greek law in fact. The Thiseio station is a sacred totem for Greece's climatology and it is one of the oldest continuously working stations in the same location in Europe. The only centennial station in Greece. Btw I had visited the station on an educational school trip when I was in high school. It is like an outdoors laboratory...Extremely taken care of. We were not allowed to come near it. For the same POR (Oct 2010-Mar 2024) it works out an average annual T of 19.8CThe Neos Kosmos Downtown Athens WMO station is a Davis fan aspirated station located 1km south of Thiseio. |

updated data with the inclusion of April 2024 now bring Neos Kosmos, Downtown Athens to 20.2C avg. annual T for a 15 year POR.
Changes made in the thread title and initial weatherbox. Btw April 2024 has been by far the warmest April in Greece's history.

The area is fenced off as far as I can see. The observatory building has tours, but since it's meant to look at the night sky, it's only open at night. So during the day it's probably off-limits.
