Spring: February is quite a bit drier and brighter than Dec-Jan even if it's still cold so often feels like pre-spring in comparison, but spring proper for me starts on the first 10C+/sunny afternoon when it's still properly bright out at 6 pm. For it to be bright at that time it can't come earlier than early March, which is when the sun starts to feel pleasant and the daffodils are coming out or close to it anyway so it works pretty well as a threshold.
Summer: this one is tricky because we often get more settled weather in May than July/August even if it's not as warm. If we get a string of 20C+/sunny days in mid-May it essentially feels like summer starts then, otherwise late May. Bright outside until nearly 10 pm, warm weather still an appreciated novelty, the flowers coming towards their peak colour and everything feels fresh - a beautiful time of year.
Autumn: in late August you start to get the first days when the midday sun isn't strong enough to feel summery, plus by then it's pitch black at 9 pm, you know there aren't many warm sunny days left and the mornings start to feel fresher. Heavy morning dew and mist in the valley followed by benign, lukewarm sunny afternoons are typical early September weather that we don't really get at any other time of year.
Winter: typical late-autumn weather of wind and rain followed by a sunny interlude before the next lot of wind and rain comes in often continues well into meteorological winter, so again this one is hard to pin down. Once all the leaves have fallen and been cleared away, unless it's colder and snowier than average, 20th November will have the same dead look as 20th January. Unless we get snow or harsh frosts in late Nov/early Dec, the first high below 5C or just plain old 1st December will have to do as the first day you know it's winter.
All in all, our seasons are pretty even in length compared to most places.

Spring: late March when the sun gets strong enough to melt snow even in sub-freezing conditions and it stays light until 9 PM. Summer: mid-June when it isn't chilly at night anymore and white nights really kick in. Fall: late August when nights get completely dark, sunshine is weak and I'm constantly brushing fallen leaves off my car. Winter: if winter was anything like normal this would be late November when average temps drop below freezing and snow starts to stick around. In recent years though, late December at best.

For Renmark, the typical Australian definitions with the 1st of the month fits quite well (excluding this year)
Summer: Dec 1-Feb 28 Autumn: Mar 1- May 31 Winter: Jun 1- Aug 31 Spring: Sept 1- Nov 30
For Melbourne, the North American Definition fits better IMO.

Technically we're the same as Australia but flipped but geographically I'd say this place is more like:
Winter (mean below 0C):
10 Dec-10 Mar
Deep winter (mean below -2C):
30 Dec-14 Feb
Spring (mean 0-10C):
11 Mar-10 May
Summer (mean 10C or above):
11 May-28 Sep
High summer (mean 16C or above):
28 Jun-14 Aug
Autumn (mean below 10C):
29 Sep-9 Dec

Summer: Usually the second half of May brings the first thunderstorms and the first "rainy season" type of weather with highs around 30-32 C and lows in the 24 C range with quite high humidity. I would say summer starts around May 20th or so here. Conversely, the first half of October is usually still quite summer-like with very warm/hot temperatures, good amount of rain, and very warm nights. The last 10 days of October is usually when the first cool front comes through, so I'd say May 20 - October 20 is our summer.
Fall: Usually around October 20th or so I'd say. We on average get our first sub-15 C low in early November.
Winter: I'd say early December. That's (normally) when relatively cool nights become more consistent and common. The last few years though have had really warm Decembers though that felt more like an extended October. I'd say Winter normally ends in late February/early March when the sun angle is increasing rapidly and the sun starts feeling harsh.
Spring: Usually in the second half of February the sun starts getting harsh and very noticeably stronger, but we can still get strong cold snaps during that time. I would say March for sure when 80 F highs start being more common and consistent. By April the sun feels like summer.

Full-blown summer conditions here can persist well into September, and the ocean can be really warm, so potentially nice for the beach. I was really hoping for a more summer-like September. That's why I am kind of bummed out about this weekend because it's so cool. I like cooler weather, of course, but it's just bad timing. If it were 10 degrees warmer, it would have been fantastic beach weather.
I think the same thing about March, foe example. We can easily have full-blown winter weather late in the season.

Winter (Below 0C): Nov 20 - March 16 Spring (0C - 10C): March 17 - May 11 Summer (Above 10C): May 12 - Sept 20 Autumn (10c - 0C): Sept 21 - Nov 19 This is from the 61-91 normal. 4 months of winter, 3 months of spring, 4 months of summer and 2 months of autumn. That doesn't look that bad really. The last decades have also been much warmer so the winter have shortened and the summer is longer by now The climate in Oslo has gone from continental with quite cold and snowy winters to borderline oceanic with around 0C and rain/snow most of december - february.

I'd say spring begins in the end of March to beginning of April. Of course, if the snow melts earlier than that, it's spring then. Summer often begins during the last week of May, and ends usually after the first week of September. In Umeรฅ, fall often lingers on until late December, although sometimes winter begins in early November.

There are three seasonal definitions that I like: 1) The Wawa Seasonal Index (invented by City-Data user wawa1992). It goes like this:
Winter is defined where the mean temperature averages at or below freezing. Summer is defined where the mean temperature averages 68F/20C or above. Spring and Fall are defined as the seasons between Winter and Summer.
2) The Zzontar Season Index (invented by user of same name in another forum) defines the seasons as the following:
The last day of Winter is the last date in which the daily maximum temperature does not exceed 0ยฐC. The last day of Spring is the last date in which the daily minimum temperature drops to 0ยฐC. The first day of Fall coincides with the first frost after mid summer (after July 16th). The first day of Winter occurs when the daily maximum temperature does not exceed 0 degrees Celsius for the first time after mid summer.
3) The Glacial Seasonal Index (invented by Yours Truly). It works like this:
Find the coldest and hottest days of the year. Calculate the mid-mid points. Point X = A/2 + (A+B)/4; Point Y = B/2 + (A+B)/4 The points in the year when the mean temperature crosses these points (X and Y) is the point at which the seasons change.
These definitions don't work for all cases, so you might have to use a different base. For example, most of Canada would not have a summer with the default Wawa, so one might want to use Wawa (0,15) for cooler climates or the Zzontar (10) for warmer climates. The Glacial Seasonal Index will work in all cases outside of the tropics.
For Kamloops, BC:
Wawa: Winter = November 25th to February 16th = 93 days long Spring = February 17th to July 2nd = 136 days long Summer = July 3rd to August 22nd = 51 days long Fall = August 23rd to November 24th = 94 days long
Zzontar: Winter = December 17th to January 26th = 41 days Spring = January 27th to March 24th = 57 days Summer = March 25th to November 4th = 225 days Fall = November 5th to December 16th = 42 days
Glacial: Coldest day of the year = January 9th Warmest day of the year = July 30th midpoints = April 20th and October 19th mid-midpoints = Feb 28, June 9; Sept 8, Nov 29
Winter = November 29th to February 27th = 91 days Spring = February 28th to June 8th = 101 days Summer = June 9th to September 7th = 91 days Fall = September 8th to November 28th = 82 days

It depends a lot on how you define the seasons. In here the official definition seems to be:
- Dec 1 - Feb 28/29 Winter - Mar 1 - May 31: Spring - Jun 1 - Aug 31: Summer - Sep 1 - Nov 30: Autumn
If I had to describe how I describe each season, and to which periods of the year each season corresponds for my place, it would be something like:
- Winter: when in starts to snow instead of raining and when lows get below freezing or very close to it. In here indicatively these conditions are observed from the first half of December to the first half of March, and the coldest periods are more likely to be observed at the end of December, January and the most of February. (*Evidently we don't get very cold winters in general, in most cases we don't have a stable snow cover for example*) - Spring: I think that spring starts a little before when I see the first blossoms and leaves on trees and goes on until summer starts. Our springs tend to be pretty rainy too, so the end of spring is also evident for the decreasing of rainy days. Following this definition spring in here goes on from middle March to middle June - Summer: when days are reliably warm (if not hot) and rain is limited to thunderstorms in the evening. We can have summer-like days in May already, but the weather usually stabilises on the summer conditions only in the second half of June. As for the end instead, usually we start to have more variable and rainy conditions starting from middle September (on average). The hottest periods usually are July and the first half of August. - Autumn: the temperatures range from the summer to the winter values, but the constant aspect is the more frequent rain. More or less it goes from mid September to the beginning of December. Foliage tends to be quite late and inconsistent in here, so I don't take it into too much consideration (even if a good foliage definitively makes it looks like a real "Autumn-like atmosphere").
