Both are on 38'S and are very oceanic climates, although Geelong has a rain shadow effect and it can be prone to extreme heat (being just south of Melbourne). Geelong's sunshine hours will be around 2,200, if I had to estimate (with its 38 clear days annually). So this makes Whatakane sunnier at 2,440 hrs. Geelong is prone to a drizzle and overcast weather, whereas Whatakane would receive more moderate to heavy rain.

Clearly Geelong, similar summer mean temps but less cold rain and better chance for extreme heat and warmer record lows in warm half of year

Tough battle, I prefer the temps of Geelong but the precipitation of Whakatane. Gonna go with the NZ climate despite the slightly cooler averages, because Victorian summer is so bipolar and there isn't enough rain there.

Interesting that Whakatāne has both more rainfall and sunshine hours of the two. Wonder if Geelong’s warmer nights have more to do with a urban heat island or with more overcast weather.

I doubt there is any UHI at Avalon Airport. Avalon Airport is way out of Geelong's CBD area. Will it be a place to accurately determine Geelong's general climate? I don't know... The climate data is based on (the now defunct) Geelong Airport and Geelong Racecourse, which make more sense as they're situated in the heart of Geelong.
