Serres is north of Thessaloniki in Greek Macedonia just off the borders with Bulgaria. Situated in the second biggest valley of Greece after Thessaly. Its a Med climate for the most part. It has extremely hot summers and during 2024 summer it recorded Greece's mean max record of 39.1C for July. Most notably the 38.2C summer mean max for 2024. Very close to the Montoro European record of 38.5C back in 2017. Sunshine hours are significantly underestimated due to digital sunshine recorder. Nearby Sandanski in Bulgaria with a classic sunshine recorder is around 2.700 hours. Serres should be around 2.800 hours. Its a C for me.  |

Anyway, are these climate boxes accurate? Summer temps are way too overstated... Serres is located around 40 km from the sea. Its an inland area at low elevation completely sheltered by the Macedonian mountains. The Serres valley is the second biggest in the country completely cut off from the sea. Sea breezes can't really moderate Ts during the summer over there. That's why it is also chilly during the winter. Back in 1963 Serres recorded -23.0C during a freak snow event. Its only a 14 year POR but the past decade has seen very hot summers in Greece. I dont expect a major shift over a 30 year POR. Yeah but this is a 30 year POR and Sandanski is at 200 meters + altitude. While Serres is 40km south of Sandanski and at only 30 meters elevation. |

Station placement is decent. Ground station in a grassy area.  |

Between 1971-2010 it was a Stevenson Screen (the abandoned SS is still visible on Google earth) and from 2011 the station was replaced with a Vaisala AWS. Btw its the same EXACT model with the Sicily station which recorded the WMO European record. Here is another angle  |
