Both are oceanic climates. One is more "continental" and semi-arid influenced and the other is more strongly "maritimed" and wetter. Both are around on the same latitude (35'/36'S).

Bendigo 100%.... never lived there ( we, the family, lived 150klm to the north east ), but know the region very well, having visited rellies there many times and worked there there on a construction project ( FIFO from Darwin ) for 3 months Jan-Mar 2000. Shits all over any insipid NZ climate....

Generally no... but Victoria north and west of the Great Divide doesn't get the extreme changeability of southern Victoria.... don't get me wrong, winter cold is a bit shitty, but Springs, Summers and Autumns are not too bad in northern Victoria and as you can see in the climate box, there is often some extreme heat in the Bendigo region. I have said it before on this forum... one particular Jan day in Bendigo on our construction site was likely the worst day at work I have ever experienced... 42c, a howling northerly blowing, and overcast all day... never seen such a shit day before or since.... working up on top of the 6 story Telstra building installing a huge satellite antenna... the heat was simply debilitating and now 24 years later would be deemed too dangerous to work in.... was tough... lol

Might have to go with Whangarei for getting more reliable rain. It's a close one though, Bendigo has more interesting temps/variability.

Bendigo. Way more potential for summer heat and drier winters. I have to say I'm surprised at how cool the summer lows are in Whangarei - thought they'd be more like 16-17 C.

Isn't that pretty rare in NZ? Many northern towns/cities have summer lows around 13C-15C (aside from Cape Reinga which is at the northernmost tip of NZ). A summer low of 17C will be a feat in many parts of the North Island, no?

But as far as significant population centers I would guess some of the central Auckland sites like Albert Park (with a bit of an UHI?) would be the warmest with lows around 16.5-17 C in Jan / Feb. As for highs, I believe remote sites around the Bay of Plenty are the hottest with highs around 26 C. Pretty embarrassing for the latitude IMO.
