September: a mixed bag of significant weather events throughout the Northern Territory, including record breaking heat, record breaking cold and unseasonal record breaking rains. Darwin Airport recorded the highest mean max temp for September, coming in at 34.3c, which is +1.6c above the long term mean. The mins were also +1.3c above the mean. The Darwin Airport also recorded 11 days of the month +35c ( previous record 9 such days in 1971 ) And despite the record breaking heat, Darwin also recorded the lowest max temp of September with a max of only 26.8c on the 17th. The cold day was the result of a north west cloudband which dropped 52.4mm rain at the Airport and more than 70mm at some coastal suburban sites. Another unseasonal rain system brought record breaking rains to the desert regions of the central western NT, with many outback roads still closed and communities isolated. Rainfall - 61.0mm rainfall on 5 days ( long term mean 16.3mm, median 6.4mm ) Highest daily fall - 52.4mm on the 17th Max temps - 34.3c av ( long term mean 32.7c ) Highest max 36.7c on the 10th. Lowest max 26.8.4c on the 17th Min temps - 24.3.c av ( long term mean 23.0c ) Highest min 26.3c on the 21st. Lowest min 18.5c on the 14th. Rainfall - 4.6mmmm falling on 4 days ( long term mean 8.7mm) Highest daily fall 1.8mm on the 25th. Max temps - 28.4c av ( long term mean 27.5c) Highest max 35.2c on the 6th. Lowest max 22.7c on the 16th Min temps - 12.0c av ( long term mean 10.3c. ) Highest min 21.9c on the 6th. Lowest min 4.4c on the 14th.

CRAPTEMBER 2024 - WETTEST AND COLDEST ON RECORD In South Yorkshire
What in Satan's fucken' butthole was that abomination? Easily the worst I've experienced and that includes the fuckfests I survived in Buxton. This dump of a month was perhaps not as cold as some of those but stone me was it wet. That insanely bad all-day heavy rain event on 30th was a fitting end and gave me nightmares about rescuing destroyed furniture from flooded houses. A sub 17°C avg. max in September? Fuck off mate. Also, drizzle occurred and was mentioned on at least 14 days of the month - a new record. It was also, of course, incredibly cloudy and monochrome. Oh yes - of course, despite being one of the most thundery Septembers on record, we got NO storms locally whatsoever, missing every single one. This month was a total disgrace. It was a shock to the system plunging into autumn even after a mediocre "summer". Yet again, increasingly frequent heavy all day rain events and record rainfall totals make the top story; 50% of the "wettest month on record" have occurred within the last 20 years. Not a good trend in the global warming era.

Very similar mean temp to the last September. The beginning of the month continued right where Boregust left off, with anomalous troughing and a polar outbreak the second week bringing lows below the monthly mean minima for September. A major saving grace occurred in the final week of the month, with anomalously warm lows plus an anomalously warm airmass of tropical origin was advected north by Hurricane Helene as it traversed north on the 27th with near-record breaking warm lows, that ultimately prevented the month from being catastrophically below average. Rainfall and max temps were close to average, sunshine was below average and minimum temps were above average. Strong winds continued on from August into the first week of September, with 100km/h gusts hitting most of the metro area on the 2nd. Also, on the 14th, we had our coldest September maximum since 2004. Moron can confirm this.

Perth, Western Australia. September Summary
Max monthly temp: 28.6°C Min monthly temp: 5.8°C
Mean Max temp: 22.6°C (+2.1°C) Mean Min temp: 10.3°C (+0.7°C)

September turned out to be very much the opposite of August here in Perth. It was a much warmer and drier month than average with significantly more sunshine. The sunshine hours are impressive given we haven't got back to the long daylight hours yet.

After the ultra-monotonous July and August finally September gave some well-needed variation. The first 10 days were record warm, and saw two new all-time records. The middle of the month saw varingly above or below temperatures, while the end was cool and very autumnal, the temp even falling below freezing on the last day of the month. Turku recorded its all-time warmest September daily mean temp with 20.5C (or 20.9C using max+min/2), and the Artukainen station hit a new all time record high for September on the 5th. Turku Airport hit 28.0C on the same day, a new all time-record for the city as a whole, beating the old one of 27.8C hit in the 1930s I think. Precipitation was average, coming mostly from frontal systems, and only one day had significant thunder (2 fizzers). Sunshine was a bit above average, ranging from 12.8 hours to 0.0 hours a day. The cooler, or in fact, more normal conditions during the last 10 days shattered any hopes for a record-breakingly warm month, but it ended still much above average. All in all, a very variable month and just like September should be. Well, I could've lived without the freeze.
Highest high: 27.5C (5th) Highest low: 16.4C (10th) Lowest high: 11.6C (29th) Lowest low: -0.3C (30th)
Anomalies from 91-20:
High: +2.6C Mean: +2.3C Low: +1.9C Precipitation: +3mm (105%) Sunshine: +24h (+115%)

The month was almost a carbon copy of August in terms of temps, in fact even slightly cooler. This just goes to show how anomalous August was, since it hasn't been a cold September. In saying so, we did get a decent cold snap mid-month with our equal coldest September max temp since 2009. We finally bucked the 2024 trend of having all or nothing rainfall, and it has been by far the most normal month for rainfall.

September 2024:
The month of September started very promising.
7 days with 30C+ temps and solid first 10 or so days. Very summery start indeed. In fact, just as warm as an average July or August.
And then my hopes of having a great rest of the month disappeared like the Atlantis. Cyclone Boris brought the floods to many places in Central Europe. It brought the arctic air here, knocking down the temps significantly.
It took 5 days for temps to return to average, where they stayed for about another 10 days.
And then at the end of the month, another polar strike came down, dropping the temperature significantly again, with the final hammer blow to the head being a polar morning low of 3.9C on the last day of the month. The month was also much wetter than average.
Although the month actually ended above average in terms of temperature, I cannot help myself to stop cringing. Why? Allow me to present to you a lobotomizing, bone-crushing drop from August into Septictember:
Massive 8C and 7C drops in max and mean temp, 150 sunshine hours less than in August?! And just look at the difference between the August and September record lows.
Fucking shit is a joke.
Anyways, the anomolies:
High: 23.6C (+1C) Mean: 18.1C (+1.4C) Low: 13.2C (+1.4C) Precipitation: 167.4 mm (+63.6 mm) Sunshine: 189 h (+5 h)
For Split, it was more or less the same shit. Although, they did set a new record high of 35.1C (+0.9C) on the 1st, so that's a plus.
High: 25.9C (+0.5C) Mean: 22.3C (+0.6C) Low: 19.1C (+0.7C) Precipitation: 124 mm (+41.7 mm) Sunshine: 236 h (-10 h)

A slightly cooler than average (anomalies of −1.5 °F highs, −1.2 °F lows) and very dry (anomaly of −3.10"/19%) September. Generally sunny on most days. Overall fairly stable temps leading to a pleasant but uneventful month. I didn't mind a return to California-like weather and appreciate a bit of precip variability, but I do miss the rain a bit now and hope October gets at least average precip, as well as a few warm days to appreciate amidst the inevitable coming of winter. Fall colors are showing up pretty nicely. I'm excited to see the more vivid colors later into October/November and will enjoy my first fall in New England. I spent the last weekend in Northern New Hampshire including a climb up Mount Washington, which had really nice fall foliage already. It was a really nice day there by Mount Washington standards, about 10c and foggy but clearing up briefly with relatively calm winds. I used a station around the base of the mountain for those two days in my overall 2024 weather box.

Average monthly temp was exactly normal 0.0F and precip was 3.08" above normal. I got a good bit more rainfall than the airport due to a band of heavy rain ahead of Hurricane Francine on Sept 10 - didn't get much locally from the actual hurricane when it made landfall on Sept 11 in SE LA.
