This year, most likely in the month of November 2024, I am installing a simple temperature/humidity sensor in a small greenhouse against the west wall of my house. Not for growing anything, but as an artificial climate study. I've ordered the sensor, and am going to get the other stuff over the remaining days of October. In here I'll post the temp and humidity conditions that the set-up achieves, out of interest. Hoping to run it from 1st November onwards. I have an interest in artificial climates and microclimates, so am going to see how the conditions compare with the actual outside temperature and sunshine levels. I'll update this thread as I get it set-up and get readings taken.
It will be extremely interesting to see what temps I record each month. Will it stay warmer overnight? Will it get super hot in the day if the sun comes out? Fascinating times ahead. The temp sensor will be in a radiation shield so it doesn't get the direct sun's rays. Stored heat from the wall should allow it to stay warmer in the evening/overnight.

Got the greenhouse ordered, should be here tomorrow aparently. The sensor will take a bit longer to arrive.

Greenhouse is here, I will assemble it once I get the sensor, hopefully this week if I'm lucky, after all the Royal Fail are delivering it so wish me luck.

Had to order a nother fucking weather station didn't I. I bet ya that www.weathersho.p.co.uk don't refund the fucked sensor that doesn't work. I'll cut their stinkin heads off with a hedge trimmer.

Got another weather station set up today. The greenhouse hasn't been set up yet, so it and its outdoor transmitter are in my computer room and I'll do that either later today or tomorrow.

Built the greenhouse in the past hour, sensor is inside so I'll be using the final week of October as a trial period.

First full 24 hour period being recorded, currently at 00:35AM the station is reading 12.6°C. My nearest weather station is reading 12.4°C. At night numbers will be very similar to the outdoor temp probably.

Comparing with my nearest weather station, in overcast conditions.
GH low temp: 11.7°C Nearest PWS low temp: 11.3°C
GH current temp: 13.9°C Nearest PWS current temp: 12.6°C
Even in cloudy conditions it's giving over a degree of additional warmth.

First bit of sun in ages. So at 15:12, the temp in La Casa Verde has reached a staggering... 16.4°C. Mind you, that's still more than outside, which is, um, 15°C. Actually, we reached 16.6°C, which is about 1.5°C above the air temperature outside.

11:44AM, we have some proper sun right now - and it's a blistering 18.9°C in La Casa Verde. Holy greenhouse effect! Just 11°C outside.

Reached 26.5°C in there today - I think the sensor could be a bit better shielded perhaps.
Ad: So today, 28th Cuktober, I will make an adjustment that might reduce the amount of excess solar radiation induced heat that seems to have happened, and see what effect it has on the next day with sun.

The temp seems a little slower to react to sunny conditions now, checking on a mild day with some mid-day sunny intervals.

Time to compare the last week of October in La Casa Verde against the recorded outdoor climate. As can be seen, the average max outdoors was 14°C, against 17.5°C, a difference of +3.5°C. As can be seen, the average min outdoors was 8.6°C, against 8.8°C, a difference of +0.2°C. So as can be gleaned, and as expected, La Casa Verde's temperature is influenced by solar radiation in the large, especially on sunny days. However, I concluded that the response to solar radiation during a fully sunny mid-day period, from 11AM-1PM, was excessive, thusly an adjustment was made to the set-up. This effect was seen particularly on 27th, when, on what was a very cool day, the sensor of La Casa Verde reported some 26.5°C.

A few short periods of sun for the first time since 1st November here raised the temperature at La Casa Verde up to 16.8°C, compared to an outdoor temperature of 12°C.

Half of November is over and it's time to see how La Casa Verde's temperatures compared with the outside recorded temperature at the weather stations I use in my long term records. Here is the temps outside and in the greenhouse. The first half of November 2024 was much cloudier than average. As such max temps were quite similar on many days, except for the few sunnier days when there is a stark difference, especially on 1st, where La Casa Verde soared to nearly 23 degrees. The cloudy days still saw a temp about a degree above that of outside, as well. Looking at the nights, they were generally warmer in La Casa Verde than outside, except what appears to be on a few occasions under clear nights with strong radiational cooling, where it appears La Casa Verde got somewhat colder, such as on 15th. The truth is this can be explained by the fact that I still use the weather station for my Sheffield weather records before I moved somewhat further from that location, so while those are OK for representing the Sheffield area, my local area is less well represented by that station on clear cold nights. Where I live now traps cold air on clear nights and acts as a cold hollow; so infact some less accurate (in daytime mainly) PWS's in my area actually got down to 0°C on AM of 15th, so La Casa Verde's temp of 1.3°C could still be above my local minimum temperature, despite these temps being lower than the station within Sheffield itself I've been using since 2018.

Interesting thread. I'm reminded of the digital rain gauge I had many years ago that had a thermometer that always went haywire in direct sun. 95/35 F diurnal ranges, 90 F in November, 118 F in summer, etc. It was amusing just for how ridiculous it was.

So, how has La Casa Verde handled the cold spell so far.
On the first cold night, it had snowed overnight, and the couple inches of snow on the top actually acted to insulate it, such that it avoided an air frost overnight (compared to outside) later that morning after the precip cleared up. Then, I had to knock the snow off, but that meant it got below freezing inside, so the last three nights has seen the temp reach as low as -2.9°C. However, in the day, it has been 2-3°C warmer than outside, due to solar radiation. The sun angle is so low now though, that it is moving through some trees, blocking the intensity of the light, causing a dip in temperatures at about 12:30-1PM until it moves into a clearer area. It is interesting how much a 1-2" layer of snow insulates the greenhouse by stopping heat escaping through the roof as easily, it works similarly to foam or polystyrene in this regard, which could also be used before a cold night to stop temps dropping as much overnight.
