Never seen Game of Thrones, but for what I've seen Westeros does have a lot of climatic variety. Geographically it's roughly based on an altered form of Great Britain, with the story loosely based on the Wars of the Roses. Another cool piece of trivia, much of it is filmed in Northern Ireland, and Owen's hill has been featured, seriously. I saw elsewhere a university had also figured out a climate model for Middle Earth. Not sure if I created a thread about it back on CD. I'd say it's more based on continental Europe geographically. Dorne being Mediterranean, Winterfell pretty Northern Swedish, and Essos (the eastern continent) reminds me a lot of the middle east. The actual shape of Westeros is an alteration of the UK and Ireland turned upside down, there's plenty of videos on YouTube that demonstrate this. But yeah, it does span a far greater distance and has more variety.

The Westeros continent spans roughly from Nordkapp to Gibraltar in real world kilometres. They also filmed on Malta for a few seasons jajajaja bro. They film in various locations, including Spain bro jajajajajajaja

Someone somewhere came up with a theory that the planet is in a solar system with two stars. I'll try to find it. If it was a binary system, the other star must be like in the 'Nemesis' theory. Otherwise you would obviously see the other star.
