How far south would strong arctic fronts travel in winter if the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean sea were completely filled with land and totally flat with no mountain ranges. Would Arctic cold waves reach the Amazon in South America? I'm curious...

maybe similar to what Brownsville and southeast Texas gets? more prone to very cold air compared to Florida. But everytime an arctic front goes far south, the temperatures slowly get milder; the potency weakens land or no land. Once you get deep into the tropics, prevailing easterlies and the tropical jet would interfere with higher latitude weather. Possible, but crossing 10° let alone the equator would be hard. I remember a story of a South American cold outbreak managing to cross the equator [or just the Amazon?]. Obviously wasn't that cold anymore, but still cooler than average.

I think this is the story you're talking about nei: www.city-data.com/forum/weather/1793772-tropical-coldwaves-july-2010-a.htmlPlaces at 1N at below 100 m asl getting highs of only 22C from an Antarctic airmass! Since Arctic outbreaks have so much land to travel down through North America unmoderated I guess they would be powerful enough to make it across the equator, though it would be the exception to the rule.

Interesting... I imagine since the Antarctic outbreaks in South America had to cross some water with the Drake Passage that they would be more modified than an Arctic outbreak over unbroken flat land all the way from the Arctic to South America. I am sure the air mass will slowly be modified as it travels further south but would be very cold for the latitude. I wonder if record cold high temperatures around 15C could be possible right at the equator at low elevation with this hypothetical scenario. What do you guys think?

My guess in that scenario would be as far south (obviously moderated) as southern Mexico/Cuba/Belize/Guatemala.
