I can't believe there isn't a jazz thread. If a chord only has three notes it's not worth playing. Major 7's, minor 6's, 7's etc. After studying music for 9 years I'm musically desensitized and need dissonance to get my fix. I need the harmonies to vibrate or else I don't feel them.
I, V, VI IV, and I, IV, VI V, and VI, IV, I, V and similar four chord songs need to die a horrible death unless they're spiced.

It doesn't need to be jazz though. A lot of music with colored harmonies tend to be called "alternative" though. Pyro by Kings of Leon is a great example of how you can have nuanced music without being jazz. |

As a fellow long time jazz musician I love a nice tune full of unexpected chord progressions.
