Enslaved used to be one of my favourite bands. Everything up to and including Isa is noteworthy, but everything after that album I have a hard time accepting. I'm not sure what it is exactly but...their newer stuff just doesn't sound good to me. The fact that their setlists these days are almost entirely from their latest albums dissuaded me from seeing them last year. I like this album but Below the Lights is better (among others): I agree, Below The Lights was their last really good album. But my favorite is Vikingligr Veldi One of the few bands I've seen live. Wish I could've seen them in their heyday. Vikingligr Veldi is also my favorite. Miðgarðs Eldar has an awesome atmosphere. Nowadays, the term 'atmospheric' is misused and most bands that have that label don't actually create a convincing 'atmosphere'.

Burzum - Filosofem inspired a whole new subgenre of black metal: Depressive black metal. I have been listening alot to this finnish band, Kalmankantaja.

One of my favorite Depressive black metal bands, Xasthur. The great thing about this one man band is that you can really feel his true emotions through the music and his screams. It reminds me of a bad nightmare that never ends, in a good way. The dude is clearly severely depressed. And he is from California of all places. He currently plays a different genre he calls Doom Grass which by the way is awesome as well.

And then we have this great band. This demo is considered by many, myself included, to be one of the absolute highlights (if that is an appropriate description for such a genre) of dsbm albums. And it's not even an album. The band consists of course of one miserable and suicidal individual, from Brazil. How can you be depressed in a tropical environment?
Anyways,I highly recommend this band. Absolutely glorious music.

Some truly hateful metal out of Dalarna, Sverige. I am listening to the vinyl of this now, which obviously sounds much better than the youtube version: Climate data for nearby Falun: Looks like a slightly wetter, slightly warmer Anchorage. I'll give it a B+ or weak A- rating. Very decent for Sverige! Hlidskjalf Lommaren knot snj90 @kronan Babu

Winter comes quickly there, unlike most of Scandinavia. For balance, Anchorage has a quicker spring warm-up and Østersund (and most of Scandinavia) has a slower spring. Oulu, Finland is pretty similar to Anchorage/Østersund as well. Thanks for the music. I've never heard of Lustre before but it's great. Love the title "the first snow".

Hlidskjalf, I really like this band from Östersund. It reminds me of Summoning (structurally and, melodically somewhat) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes there are strong similarities to Summoning, but I actually think Lustre is better. More trancendental and more Filosofem-esque. And its always an advantage that a band consists of one member (probably lonely and depressed as well).
Another band (1 guy of course) that is quite similar to Lustre is Eldamar from Askim, Norway. The album is not even 3 years old,but it's already considered a classic in the one-man-band/atmospheric/depressive black metal circles.

This Blut Aus Nord album plus some very dark beer makes for a sludgy, grimy, experience. Just need a good cigar and I'm set:
And another French one

Did anyone mention Dødheimsgard? My favorite album, and the only album I like is Kronet til Konge, but what an album that is. It has everything you expect from a 90s Norwegian pagan black metal album: Folkloric, norse Atmosphere, beautiful melodies and amazing tortured and original vocals by Aldrahn. My favorite song:
Sadly they jumped on the industrial, avant-garde band wagon that everyone else did around the millennium, and painted their faces with blue corpse paint and abandoned the forest and folklore all together.
Aldrahn, if you read this: Shame on you

Hlidskjalf I love the Kronet til Konge album but 666 International and especially A Umbra Omega are pretty amazing although definitely pretty different from KtK. The Supervillian Outcast album never sounded that good to me though and Monumental Possession was a bit lacklustre/boring. But yes, Aldrahn has one of the best voices in black metal. Never heard anyone else like him. His work with Zyklon-B was outstanding although more primal and frantic than with Dødheimsgard:

What do you think of this album Hlidskjalf? I think it's their best overall, with Seen Through the Veils of Darkness second. Their other stuff doesn't sound so great.

and Hlidskjalf what do you think of Arckanum? I like it. Lyrics in his early stuff are apparently ancient Swedish.
