This will probably be the strongest storm since 1987 or 1990 here.

Some extremely low atmospheric pressures right now. 949 hPa in Umeå, with some sea level stations a bit further north reporting values as low as 947 hPa and Abisko reporting 945 hPa (I think that should be with correction for altitude). The national February record is 940.5 hPa and for January it's 946.2 hPa and the all-time national record is 938.4 in December

Barometer down to 944 hPa here this morning. New record according to local media. Still not windy today. Air pressure was so low that the altimeters on the smaller passenger planes did not function properly so lots of flights cancelled, even if the weather otherwise was nothing special. Never heard of flights cancelled simply due to air pressure being too low. Barometer was down to 942.5 hPa further north along the coast, south of Bodø. National low pressure record for Feb is 941 hPa.
Water level at high tide is now extremely high, so a warning is in effect.

Soon mid-February, and last ice-day was Christmas day Dec 25th.! Not normal for 63*N. Now there is a chance of getting one Feb 14th.
But yr.no has a high of 1C the same day.
Even so, still more than 50 cm snow on the ground in the higher part of the city. And none in the lowest part.
Also, very high tide today with that extreme low air pressure

Let's see if Turku can beat Sapporo this year again. I think we got them the last 2 years.

And Stockholm had (a few single flowers) cherries blossom in early January this year 😂

I'm amazed it's that late throughout most of Japan.

Maybe the winter has been chilly this year? Not that the pic is not the average date of blooming, but the estimated date for 2020.

Wow, 1.6C jump in record for all-time warmest monthly mean in a place with a long recording history like Helsinki! And avg daily high 2.1C warmer than any other Jan month before! Jan 2020 crushes all records there...don't know if I have heard about a 1.6C jump in monthly mean except at stations with short history. Maybe Moscow in July 2010? Alaska in recent years? And probably Svalbard...

I can beat that actually even in a climate with a lower standard deviation which isn't warming up by quite as much. December 2015 in England (the country averaged as a whole, so some individual sites will have beaten the record by more) had an average Tmax of 12.0C, compared to the second best of 9.9C. www.metoffice.gov.uk/pub/data/weather/uk/climate/datasets/Tmax/ranked/England.txtThe monthly mean was 9.4C, which beat the old record by 1.9C. www.metoffice.gov.uk/pub/data/weather/uk/climate/datasets/Tmean/ranked/England.txt

Helsinki's coldest May had a mean of 1.8C (1867) and the second coldest 4.2C (1876), so a jump of 2.4C. The 1861-1890 normals had a May mean of 7.1C, and the 1881-1910 8.5C when several freak Mays fell out.

I mean, May 2018 beat records by like two degrees in many places with hundreds of years on their timeseries
