maybe from the Scandinavian heat wave ? even if the air that far north wasn't unusually warm, must have been warmer water entering from the south?

Ice days at 56N in early September? Russia is crazy. Toko, Russia OGIMET-1/-4 and 21cm snow depth on the 9th. Even Oymyakon and Norilsk have not had ice days yet. This station at 1203m further north had a high of -2.9. This station at 266m came close, +1.7

It's heat wave in Northern Siberia at the moment. Vorkuta is scheduled for 18 degrees(!), Tiksi 13, Norilsk 10, Yakutsk 14. I predict that will change drastically in a week or two.

Can anyone explain why it's so warm in Magadan (and the coast as a whole) relative to locations that aren't that far inland, such as Ust-Omchug? The mountains aren't that high...only about 2500 feet but they do have quite a breadth and width with very winding valleys, so that might be why the cold air can't extend down to the coast where Magadan is, coupled with weak onshore flow possibly. Magadan is ridiculously warm right now. And this goes on for days and days as shown by the forecasts below...wtf! Looks like this is fairly normal going by average temps in each region, so I assume it's the mountains then. Climate data for Susuman: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susuman

Still polar in Grytviken, albeit very dry (i.e. not much snowfall or sleet):
