^Well, it's not just those two towns that have been cold, the entire Sakha Republic has been seeing the coldest temps in several yrs, so I imagine that the overlying airmass itself is quite cold, and in addition to that there is an inversion at those specific locations.

just saw this. the western part of North America looks warmer overall than further east including the highest latitudes (Fairbanks is warmer than Yellowknife by about 5-10°F in winter). but most of the record cold in North America is on the west side of the continent; opposite of Eurasia. Guessing it's cause western North America has more topography allowing extreme radiational cooling and inversions?

^^Yeah, might be terrain allowing more inversions (frost hollows). Also, the mountains in Alaska are very high, blocking the oceanic air.

Expanding on my previous post, both Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon managed to hit the -70F threshold yesterday. Much more impressive than the last several yrs when the lowest has been -55C (-67F). More impressive numbers today, with Verkhoyansk posting a max of -56C (-69F). About 14C or 26F colder than avg. www.pogodaiklimat.ru/monitor.php?id=24266

In what way are cold lovers "hypocritical"? Please quit it with that stupid shit. You make yourself sound like a drooling moron saying dumb shit like that. Well, maybe I was unnecessarily judgemental.., everyone has different tastes. Positive thing is (imo) that after some very cold days it is getting a bit milder in Oymyakon Fair enough. And sorry for being so rude. It just irks me when people say that...

Both Oymyakon and Verhkoyansk have failed to reach -50C for the past 7 days (since January 11th)!
Edit: Verkhoyansk broke the streak today (the 19th). Oymyakon did not.

Some forecasts from Arctic Canada: Baker Lake (64.3 N) Taloyoak (69.5 N) Resolute (74.7 N) Eureka (80.0 N) Looking colder than normal in Baker Lake, and departures headed more positive the more north you go.... Eureka's coldest time of the year isn't until late February/early March, so seeing their forecasts for the next 6 weeks or so should be quite interesting.

Summit Camp seems to be even more brutal than usual this winter, didn't they have a -55 C high or something a couple of weeks ago? Polar night is due to end in Summit Camp quite soon, I believe it ends on January 29th or 30th.

High Level (58°N) in Northern Alberta. Way worse than here of course, but currently a "mild" spell considering the January averages of -15°/-25°C.

I was just watching a documentary on Svalbard yesterday where it was said Svalbard can reach -40°C in the winter. Nowadays it has trouble reaching -4°C.

Full overcast polar cold Winnipeg being Winnipeg The record high for Oymyakon in January is -16.6C so this might be worth keeping an eye on, the forecast high for the 31st is nearly 30C above average for the time of year!
