Browsed through the sports threads and didn't see much about skiing so decided we should have a thread dedicated to it. Especially since there's been so much talk in the shoutbox about it.

Awesome sport and one I wish I could do much more often. I’ll post some pics from Breckenridge later.

Wow, didn’t notice this thread. After hiking and fishing it’s probably my 3rd favorite activity.
I haven’t skied yet this season but I’ll go to Bristol mountain a couple times although it’s not very good skiing. When I move out west I’ll definitely ski more often.

According to their website the Mt Lemmon ski valley now has a 44” base which is fantastic for them I’d imagine. With the upcoming storm system the ski valley is forecast to receive an additional 8-12 inches over the next few days. I’m definitely going to try to get up there soon.

AJ1013alex992Talking about skiing, this article is pretty good about the local resorts around me. Extrovert at Blue Knob rivals the difficultly of stuff at Brekenridge in Colorado with only being a 1100' foot drop. Its unbelievably steep and unpredictable www.dcski.com/articles/679

Has anybody here learned to ski as an adult? How easy is it?
I love snowy mountain landscapes and I am in pretty good shape and everything but I've never been skiing because I've always been put off having to start learning right from the beginning, plus there's nowhere to ski near me that I could regularly get to.

I learned to ski as a little kid and it wasn’t that hard. My whole family picked it up pretty easily as kids too. So if it’s easy for a 5-6 year old to learn, I can’t imagine it’s very hard for an adult. Anyway, it’s really fun so you’d enjoy it a lot if you started.

@boombo I've frequently cross-country skied during my teenage years, but for some reason never tried downhill skiing until this month (I'm 29). It's much fun and since you're in shape not particularly physically demanding as a sport. We've taken a 2-hour course and after that proceeded on blue slopes, learning how to parallel turn on our own. The second day was a lot of fun already! I didn't expect it to be as straightforward frankly - not to say we didn't fall flat on our asses numerous times.

I've lots of great memories from cross-country skiing. Especially through a now cut down forest south of Nyköping in some rather narrow and steep (by local comparison) trails that I made myself. Sadly, I haven't skied for a decade now. Don't have any pairs that suit me for cross-country and own no downhill ones at all. To make matters worse, the local ski "resort" has its top at 45 m asl...

So last weekend I was skiing, and my damn bindings broke on me. Thankfully I wasn't injured, but I was forced to get new skis mid season which isn't the best.
Luckily the local ski shop had a sale going on and I bought these babies

Late reply, but if you call 16 "adult," that's when I started. I didn't have any trouble. If you already know ice skating it will help a lot.

I feel like learning to ski at four helped me a lot with my balance for other stuff. Especially running and cycling on ice and the technique for being able to keep my arms in a position not to fall while running through an icy street. That part is something I'm really thankful to early skiing for.

Luckily the local ski shop had a sale going on and I bought these babies Nice! -good reviews. Look like the kind of ski I need, rather than the cheapies I buy off TradeMe. Last pair I got for around $60, and checked the reviews after skiing them for a day. It described them as "ideal for the beginner who wants to explore more of the mountain" -great for carving though. Found this little snippet showing how much of the younger generation ski these days -kind of goofy, but funky at the same time. good camera work. Probably skied this mountain a 100+ days. Nice, I've skied 22 days so far this season it was time for new ones. These skis were $1200 US but marked down to $750 US so a good deal but still expensive
