Colder, wetter, and snowier than average.
January started very mild, with some areas recording daily record highs in the first week. On the 7th it rained a lot, Madison saw over an inch of rain. Then around the 18th it switched to below-normal weather. Milwaukee finally dropped below -10C on the 19th, it went through all of December and most of January without seeing that. The last days were the coldest in many years, and it was windy too. Both Milwaukee and Madison saw lows below -30C and wind chills below -40. Milwaukee's lowest wind chill based on hourly data was -47.0F/-43.9C. Madison -48.2F/-44.6C.
Weatherbox for Milwaukee: Snow depth reached 12" (Madison only saw 9")

This January parts of England were more continental than Stavanger... A very bipolar month in Trondheim - first 12 days mild with hardly even freezing lows, then the last half of the month was colder than normal. Got a lot of snow as the cold period started, that snowpack stayed with us. Trondheim Airport Værnes (12 m) Mean: -2.1°C (-0.3°C compared to 81-2010) Avg high: 0.7°C Avg low: -4.7°C Abs max: 8.8°C Abs low: -15.8°C (in the city abs low was -11.7°C at Voll 127 m asl) Precip: 63 mm (90 %) Mean snow depth: 14 cm (lacking data for Værnes so Lade is used) Sunhrs: 30 (data from Trondheim - Gløshaugen) Røros (625 m) had avg high -5.1°C and avg low -12.3°C, mean -8.7°C, abs low -29.2°C, mean snow depth 22 cm. While on Hitra, mean was 0.9°C and abs low -6.9°C In the city itself, 24-hr mean varied from -0.6°C (Høvringen, 44 m) to -3.5°C (Risvollan, 84 m).
So a 2.9°C difference within the city limits, and this time the coldest station is not the one at highest altitude, but one of the stations furthest from the fjord (sea) and probably prone to inversions/stagnant air. It also seems most stations in the city were wetter than the airport, Lade 134 mm and Voll 139 mm.

Very dry January in here, with frequent foehn wind which influenced a lot the temperatures of the localities closer to the mountains. This affected a lot the temperature averages, but the most impressive data for January are probably the absolute highs of the month (which, btw, are not yet at record-breaking levels). As usual, here there is the map of the places I'm considering: And here there are the January summaries: ^ this is the closest weather station to my place. Foehn wind insisted quite a lot in here (10 days with highs brought above 12°C, 2 days were even the lows were above 10°C), resulting in higher temperatures in comparison with the average of the last year (+1.4°C for both avg high and daily means, +1.0°C for lows). January is generally a quite dry month in here, but this year it was 43 mm below the average. For the other stations I don't have long term averages to compare with. As a qualitative analysis, I can say that the month has been dry everywhere over the area, and that foehn wind hit strongly all the localities in the valley (the higher you go, the more stable this warm wind was), while the localities in the plain (in particular, Turin and its airport) have been interested by it only in a couple of days.

Precipitation is approximate. Compared to the 91-18 average: Precipitation: 49 (51%) High average: -2.7 (-1.7 deviation) Low average: -10.5 (-4.2 deviation) Mean average: -6.6 (-3.0 deviation) Sunshine compared to 2002-2016 average: Average: 33h (118%) Cold and dry month, but not uncommonly cold. Warmest low was 0.4'C and coldeat high -15.4'C That is a fantastic winter month
