March 2019 Summary ~ My First Snowfall of 2019
Slightly below-average this March, with far above-average precipitation. Unusually early snowfall: The past few days, i.e. the 30th-31st of March, maxima struggled to surpass even 5° C..!! Bloody cold for this time of year. Not only did I receive snowfall, but also the upper Central Tablelands straddling Black Springs-Shooters Hill received snowfall (Oberon Shire; 34° S); there wasn't even the slightest hint of snowfall forecast for up North, yet lo and behold! It snowed anyways—down to 1,190 m AMSL, 33° 47' S, might I add. This was an exceptional event, indeed...the last time such cold had occured in March was in 1984—the year in which even the Northern Tablelands saw one of their most spectacular snowfalls on record, alongside a –3.2° C midday reading at Guyra. I can wager some big bucks on a repeat of the fabled 1965 Winter, the way we're heading.

Average temperature: 1,1°C Record high: 13,7°C Record low: -19,6°C Precipitation: 54 mm Sunshine: 133 h
A few degrees warmer than normal, quite snowy and rainy but normal sunshine anyway. March along with November are the "meh" months I'd rather skip so I'm glad we're in April.

Umeå: 1.9/-7.3 (90-17 average: 1.8/-6.5, so a little below average) Max/min was 10.7/-22.7 There's no precipitation station in Umeå, but nearby stations got between 70-90mm. Average is 33mm, so about 200-300% deviation... Sunshine was 156h vs 167h for 2002-2016 so slightly below average, 93%.

It was quite a dry month with 1/3 of the precipitation happening the last 2 days and lots of sun. The dryness and sunshine made up for the cool temps so it was a solid month. Here’s the month: And the year:

Seattle March 2019 SummaryOverall it was a pretty nice month. The early part of the month was below average but the mild to warm weather after that compensated for it. 79°F highs on March 19 and 20 broke the monthly record highs for March. The 59°F low on March 19 also broke the monthly record high minimum temperature for March. Interestingly, NWS Seattle and especially Olympia had much colder lows on March 19 and 20. The month basically had 13 below-normal days followed by 18 above-normal days. Some light snow occurred in early March. March 1-13 was consistently below average but March 14-31 was above average and resulted in a +1.9F average departure. Precipitation was far below average and Seattle is already considered abnormally dry by the US Drought Monitor: droughtmonitor.unl.edu/Average high: 57.2°F/14.0°C (+3.5°F/1.9°C) Average low: 39.7°F/4.3°C (+0.4°F/0.2°C) Highest temperature: 79°F/26°C (19th and 20th) Lowest temperature: 28°F/-2°C (5th) Warmest low: 59°F/15°C (19th) Coolest high: 40°F/4°C (6th) Precipitation: 1.37" (-2.35") Snowfall: 0.8" (0")

A pretty nice March. The first half was pretty cold, sunny, and breezy with intermittent snow showers while the second half was comparably mild to warm, especially coming out of a 1.5 month cold spell. Lots of sunshine as well. To be honest, the last two months feel like some NE Asian climate like South Korea. Let's hope for a hot and humid summer with tons of rain then. ***Remember, this data is for YVR and apparently they didn't record any accumulating snowfall but other locations eastward a few km did. I'll see if I can do Coquitlam if there is a complete dataset.

Not a bad March, nice and cool for the most part, could have done better in the snow department though. 20 out of 31 (64.5%) of days were below average, the warm spells had greater anomalies than the cold spells so that's why it wasn't really far below average.

Warmer than average and slightly warmer than March 2018. Ofcourse, this month was once again purely stormless. The avg low was only 0.2C cooler than Failbruary's, and the highest low was higher, once again reinforcing the wankness of Failbruary. There was some crap cold weather, but an above avg month is an above avg month. Anomolies Avg high: +1.1C Avg low: +1.1C Avg rain: -6.6mm *Sunshine is from Mildura, the nearest sun recorder for which the BOM actually managed to birth full data for...

I have the gut feeling that this will be an interesting weather year, and as the daily data is easy to obtain, I've decided to follow certain stations in Finland. Major urban areas and a few other places of interest. Here they are on the map:
