^^^ Going by your posts, you seem to prefer their early stuff. I think Rubber Soul (maybe Help) onwards is generally much better. This song, for example, is way better than any of their early work.

Strewthless - Dear Prudence is a good song, but far from their greatest. And, yes, I am partial to much of their early material as well.

Not their greatest, A Day in the Life takes that crown, but an underrated piece IMO. I like their early stuff, it's very tight and lifts your mood. But no doubt there was a raising of the bar in about 1965. Not criticising btw, I just see early vs late as an interesting discussion.

At least I'd say that their mediocre early songs trump their mediocre latter ones.

In the early days instead of a bad song they'd do a good cover instead. The White Album is largely to blame for a lot of their throwaway stuff, because it's too big, would have been a fantastic single album. I still don't understand what Paul was thinking with this though, an awful song on an otherwise brilliant album.

Strewthless - Lol, I always liked Maxwell's Silver Hammer. The main problem is where it sits on the album, doesn't fit in. Odd to drop from Something into that. The first three songs are the most important on any album IMO. Oh Darling should have been in that third place. Brilliant vocal performance.

Strewthless - Brilliant vocal performance in Oh Darling - I agree, but I never really took exception to the order of its placement on the album.

If Maxwell was kept (all of the band except Paul hated it), I would have put it after Octopus's Garden, a great song by the adorable Ringo! It sets the tone as being less serious going forwards.

Strewthless - Interesting that the rest of the band hated it. I don't object to it. Yeah, it may be a silly song, but still in a charming way.

^^^ Paul drove them all crazy with the song due to his perfectionism. They didn't like it, but were made to do lots and lots of takes to get it right. Paul really ground down George and Ringo on that one. Which caused resentment. John wasn't there, he was recovering from an accident.
The song is seen by some as symbolic of why they broke up soon after.
Anyhoo, here's The Rolling Stones.

One of the Doors' druggiest and darkest songs. It's a masterpiece, IMO.

Strewthless - how do you feel abut the Doors? Like the song I just posted? I noticed you liked when I posted End of the Night. The Doors were one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager. I read two Jim Morrison biographies when I was in high school - Break on Through and No One Here Gets Out Alive.

Shame the, "mother, I want to fuck you" is omitted from the studio version... at least they have all the fucks in the song.

I often wonder what music they would have gone on to make if Jim Morrison hadn't died so young.
