Overall a mild and wet month (+3.3F/ +3.75" precip). Lows more above normal than the highs. Didn't really have any impressive cold snaps and never even got below 30F . Jan 5-18 was pretty warm with some storms - felt like early spring. Jan 19-31 was cooler and fairly stable. Had 6 days straight of overcast conditions at the end of the month. Other stats: Lowest max: 46F Highest min: 64F Days with thunder: 5 Highest dewpoint: 70F Average dewpoint: 46F Lowest dewpoint: 19F

A reminder to everyone: Now that we're in 2020, for each month that passes, we're actually able to compare them to 1991-2020 - the next official time period. So feel free to use 91-20 instead of 91-19 We actually have to wait until Valentine's Day, as 29 days are used for each days average temps and precip (i.e. Jan 17th to Feb 14th is used for Jan 31st)

Seems a lot better to use five or 9 days instead, two/four on either side. The first week of January is colder on average than the third week of January, only to get colder again in February, here in Sweden. That wouldn't be visible if you smooth it out by 29 days.

I know that 2010 and the late 00s were anomalously cold but we don’t seem to get cold snaps as much and definitely there are far fewer snow events. No lying snow this winter again

Official countrywide stats:
Average temperature: 3,1°C (+6,6°C) Record high: 8,7°C Record low: -7,7°C (lol) Precipitation: 44 mm (-13%) Sunshine: 26,4 h (-13%)
Even warmer than December was, roughly early April temperatures. No mention of breaking any records but I sure don't remember a January quite as sad as this one.

January 2020 ended up being slightly above average overall, though this was not consistent through the month - the middle of the month was extremely cold with numerous lows in the -30s and highs in the -20s while the first week and last ten days were well above average. Stats: Average high: -9.5C (normal: -10.1C) Average low: -19.3C (normal: -20.7C) Mean temperature: -14.4C (normal: -15.5C) Highest high: 2.5C (Jan 4th) Highest low: -3.8C (Jan 28th) Lowest high: -29.4C (Jan 15th) Lowest low: -39.3C (Jan 16th) Precipitation total: 8.3mm (normal: 14.8mm) Precipitation days: 10 (normal: 10.3)

For Norway as a whole, January 2020 was the wettest recorded, with precipitation 195 % (previous record 185 %). Many stations set new precip records. Temperature for Norway were 6.1'C above normal in January 2020! Only beaten by January 1989 (+6.2'C). Some small inland areas were 10'C above normal. Svalbard airport were 1.9'C above the old normal, now 110 consecutive months above normal. Interestingly, our met office has published a map showing the difference between the 1991-2020 January temps (new normal) compared to the old 61-90 normal. Trondheim and Oslo near 2'C warmer in January, while the least warming is an area east of Stavanger with 1'C warming. Up to 4'C warming some areas inland in SE and Central Norway. cred: met.no

omegaraptor total suicide month. Thank god that can’t happen here. Notice the 27 precip days is with a 0.04" threshold. NOT a 0.01" threshold. Macquarie Island tier. Apparently it was even worse up in Seattle. Thankfully February looks much more sane to start off.

Downright pathetic temps in Portland at the same time it was cold here. Coldest high of 40F and a low of 30F? I remember those temps being really common there in the early 2000s.

Temperature deviation in January 2020 in Norway. Remember the old 61-90 normal is still used here. Some areas more than 10'C above normal, large areas 7'C or more above normal. But only about 1'C above normal near the North Cape.
cred: met.no
Warmest station:
Lindesnes: Mean: 6.6'C Avg high: 7.8'C Avg low: 5'C (in January at 58'N) Abs high: 9.8'C Abs low: 1.3'C Precip: 146.6 mm
Precip days: 20
Wettest station: Gullfjellet, Bergen (about 300 m ASL): 814,7 mm!

PUKE-uary - Speagles84's House Western Pennsylvania
6th Warmest January on record. These stats are disgusting, I don't even really feel like talking about the month. Probably why it took 4 days to post. Lowest January snow total in 14 years, and we DIDN'T EVEN GO BELOW 0F. FUCKING PATHETIC. Snow depth never went above 5", I can't talk shit enough on the "coldest" month of our year. For reference, November has never ended
